Where to live in Glasgow

We are really stuck about where to move to and hoping wise Scotsnetters might be able to help. I'm a Glasgow native so really should have all the answers but I don't!

My husband works in Glasgow and I work in Edinburgh. He drives but I don't. We have a one year old who is settling into nursery where we currently live in the South of Glasgow. We are rapidly outgrowing our flat and need to move.

Our budget is around £300k with some ability to stretch. We are looking for 3 bedrooms and a garden and a survivable commute to Edinburgh city centre using public transport. And a good school but not necessarily 'topping the league tables'.

We were set on Bishopbriggs but demand seems to outstrip supply and I'm worried about being so narrow in our focus once the pressure is really on and we have sold out flat.

I wish we could stay in the south of Glasgow where we are now but I'm worried the commute would just be too brutal with a toddler to come home to. It is also more time away from him. My job is high pressure but we are only required to be in the office 2 days a week. My husband doesn't work from home at all.

Has anyone happily done this commute from the southside? Or any thoughts on Bishopbriggs more generally? Any suggestions of where we could live would be really appreciated.

Ohh have you stayed in Bishopbriggs?

@Queenofwistfulthinking I thought that myself, strange statement to make regarding a place that’s got so much going for it.

@NauseousNancy i disagree, i think there is loads to do in Falkirk centrally. If you were living in the centre of Falkirk you could probably get by without even having a car. You get more for your money there too compared with Bishopbriggs or Lenzie. Id recommend Falkirk over Cumbernauld, Croy, other areas around there that have been suggested. But from what OP has said, I would choose Bishopbriggs as first choice.

I really appreciate everyone's thoughts, thank you! It seems like there is a consensus that Bishopbriggs would suit us best. I have lived in some genuinely not nice and unsafe places as a child and would have dreamed of having a home somewhere like Bishopbriggs so I should probably remember that as we search!

I have family in Bishopbriggs and it seems to be a pleasant family area with good transportation links.
My family are happily raising their dc there and commuting to Edinburgh and Glasgow as needed for work.

I grew up in Bishopbriggs. I left at 18 so don’t know it very well now. We lived near Cadder, the canal was on our doorstep. It’s nice compared to lots of Glasgow! I don’t think I’d go out further than Bishopbriggs, it was ideal for getting into town, escaping to countryside but Kirkintilloch etc always felt more run down to me? 😬 my DM worked from home and DF drive into city each day. If you were Cadder end you’d be quite far from train station for commute.

I also immediately thought of Bishopbriggs and Lenzie with your commute. I know a few families who live in Bishopbriggs and they said how nice it was so I’m not sure why there are nee sayers!

The commute to Edinburgh is doable if you are only going a couple of times a week. I did it from the Southside pre covid when doing a Masters at Edinburgh uni. It was expensive though, but train fares have actually decreased since then as there's no longer a peak fare.

Bishopbriggs or Lenzie would be ideal as there are some direct trains to Edinburgh during rush hour so no need to go into Glasgow first.

Both have lots of activities for children and are quite safe.

"Ohh have you stayed in Bishopbriggs?"

My husband is from there, his family still live there so I've known it since the 90s.

I just don't think it's very nice 🤷🏻‍♀️
