Avoid Glasgow tomorrow? (orange walk)

DS (13) is planning to meet a friend in the city centre tomorrow, he tells me they'll likely just be hanging about Central Station (they're both trainspotters!) but it's not sitting right with me due to the orange walk. I'd be best to just keep him at home, wouldn't I?

Yeah I would especially central station which on a normal day attracts the towns idiots never mind with an orange walk thrown in.

Motheranddaughter · 05/07/2024 17:54

What on earth do you think will happen to him

Jessieshome · 05/07/2024 17:58

What's an orange walk?

Queenofwistfulthinking · 05/07/2024 18:00

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_walk

usernother · 05/07/2024 18:07

He'll be as fine as any other day in that part of the city.

CosFuckThatGuy · 05/07/2024 18:07

It's just twats making fools of themselves and a racket, there won't be riots or anything.

AgnesX · 05/07/2024 18:10

If he times it properly to avoid Glasgow Green and the end he'll be ok ( assuming he's doing train spotting stuff on the platforms).

The routes are well publicised so he can avoid those too.

Ohhhh, sorry! Thank you. I've heard of the orange marches in Ireland of course, I had no idea they did them in Scotland too!

Eastcoastie · 05/07/2024 18:26

I previously lived in Glasgow and there was never trouble during the walks. If anything, its potentially safer because of the high police presence. The only problem i found was that driving in town if you didnt plan ahead was a nightmare if you got stuck behind it or at a crossroad. Not an issue for a trainspotter though.

Redglitter · 05/07/2024 19:04

He'll be fine. The walk will briefly pass the station but in terms of safety there will be police absolutely everywhere. There doesn't tend to much bother during the walk it's afterwards but they'll be out of the city centre by then

The marches are in Northern Ireland, not Ireland. Although there is one in Co Donegal.

Sorry for the mistake, the Wikipedia link someone posted says 'Ireland'. I did hesitate before writing 'Ireland' as I thought it was Northern Ireland but stupidly trusted Wikipedia!

tealsea · 05/07/2024 19:45

I usually tell my teen to avoid Glasgow in evenings on Old Firm days (and generally to get bus rather than train back as usually much less pished up neds on the bus) but wouldn't really worry about an orange march and in daytime.

I've edited it to fix it. Given anyone can edit a Wikipedia page, generally not a good idea to trust it😀

DeliciousApples · 05/07/2024 20:03

It'll be busy with ruad closures and police everywhere and by late afternoon there will be drunks with taps aff if the weathers nice.

I'd avoid. Just seems safer and less busy. Could he go on Sunday instead?

Arewethebadguys · 05/07/2024 21:36

It's a walk with a heavy police presence. I'd say it's probably safer than most other days 🤷🏻‍♀️

sabadoo · 05/07/2024 21:40

The orange walk is usually on pretty early so as long as he goes in a bit later it should be fine, although as others have said the area around central is grim, it is usually ok inside.

As for the orange walk, I wish they'd ban it.

Excellent! Well done 🙂

Kingoftheroad · 06/07/2024 01:09

I’d personally keep him away from it. I’ts not the bands or the parades, it’s some of the idiots that follow them. There will be a lot of drunks stoating about. Err on the side of caution

OrangeCrusher · 06/07/2024 01:16

I live in the Southside and I will definitely be avoiding the town. It’s not the march that’s the problem, although that should absolutely not be happening. It’s the drunken idiots who’ll be out in force to watch it that are the problem. There will be trouble and no doubt George Sq will be getting trashed again. Most of the participants are bused in from the environs and tend to go mental when they get into Glasgow for some reason.

Meeplemakeglasgow · 06/07/2024 08:38

It’s up to you but personally I’d avoid it like the plague.

Because essentially that’s what it is.

A plague.

Wanderinstar80 · 06/07/2024 11:11

Thanks everyone for the replies. The march itself isn't the issue here, more the stragglers as mentioned above. The last time I saw the orange walk there was a huge number of toothless wonders swigging buckie and abusing other people. DS is quiet and not a troublemaker so I can trust him, it's other people I don't trust.

Also, the weather is dry and bright atm. Where is the rain when you need it?? 😂

If he's a sensible kid surely he can be trusted to just...go to another street?

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 07/07/2024 16:23

He should be fine, but tell him not to wear his Celtic shirt.
