I'm watching Bake off the Professionals and salivating over amazing savoury brioche buns and desserts - for a special foodie meal in or around Edinburgh where should I go??

Had a lovely meal at the Kitchin. Really well looked after with fabulous food and wine.

Springwatch123 · 18/06/2024 21:39

Papillion, a lovely little Italian

The Table or Argile are both excellent if you want a proper tasting menu. Smaller venues, slightly less well known than Kitchin, Aizle etc and probably a more relaxed experience IMO.

The Kitchin. Best tasting menu ive had

Motheranddaughter · 18/06/2024 21:53

Another fan of The Kitchin

Kitchin-superb food and great staff.

Martin Wishart at the Shore. I’m vegetarian, husband isn’t, and the veggie tasting menu they do has equal care and attention as their standard tasting menu. Plus just walking into the restaurant is to find peace and calm. Outstanding.

Eorna!

The Kitchen is great food but not at the expense of the treatment of the staff. See also the hygiene certificate issue at one of his other places. There are plenty of alternatives

I’d hope that in the last 3 years ago the staff situation would have improved. I’m not aware of any incidents reported since then. All I can say is that on my visit the staff were faultless, friendly, knowledgeable, attentive but not intrusive and really on top of their game - added hugely to the experience.

I second Martin Wishart. Though must try Kitchin. There’s another thread where someone is asking for special birthday meal recommendation in Edinburgh right now too.

recyclerecycle · 19/06/2024 20:11

Aizle or Taisteal are my favourites

Chocolatelover13 · 19/06/2024 20:43

Martin Wishart every time.

Catscookbook · 19/06/2024 20:47

Junk at Newington for something lower cost but really lovely!

Lyla in Royal Terrace. Used to be 21212 by Paul Kitchen.
Stunning restaurant, very private and intimate

HappierTimesAhead · 19/06/2024 21:13

Purslane in Stockbridge

@crumpet I agree that those reports are from a few years ago, they were going to have an investigation (undertaken by someone they'd chosen so by no means independent) but I don't know of anyone who ever saw the conclusions and it's something I would have kept an eye out for as fair treatment of staff is important to me when eating out. The fact that him and his wife were taking the staff tips is what I found really grubby and has put me off for life. Shame because as I said I liked the food.

Lyla is high up my list of places to try, think it's a seafood based menu, I really enjoy Aizle. My favourite place for high end in Edinburgh is Timberyard. I liked Martin Wishart but prefer Timberyard. Really didn't rate Dean Banks unfortunately, cold food and a few other things put me off returning. Little Chart Room is nice but not really a tasting menu. Try the Michelin site as the places with Bib Gourmands are usually a good bet too
