Suggestions for 4 nights in Scotland

Looking for suggestions for a few days away. Ideally no more than around 3 hours drive from Glasgow area. With things suitable for 11-15 year olds (and parents) probably try to do AirBnB to keep costs down. Need some things to keep everyone entertained in all weathers. The brief is a bit vague, but open to suggestion. Have done Fort William, Arran, Crieff, Fife.

Newcastle is the best place. Absolutely love it and loads to do. Not too expensive, either.

@Snappyteabread The thing about Newcastle is that you’ve got options. Stop in the city centre and you’ve got all that it has or offer - great art galleries (free), the Quayside, cathedral / Uni, shopping, big open spaces, theatres etc etc. You can get the metro to Tynemouth (great market in the train station at the weekend) and go to the Beach if you want to. Get the metro to South Shields for the full seaside experience! Train to Durham in 5 mins etc etc

Also, Gretna Green outlet on your way up / down! Smile

Can't see past Aviemore area - mountain biking in Rothiemurchus, watersports at Loch Insch and Loch Morlick. Loch Tay/ Aberfoyle also great with rafting and canyoning and Ll
loch sports too. Both been perfect for my teens.

What about somewhere in Argyll? E.g. Oban/Rothesay/Dunoon/Helensburgh. Oban is right at the edge of your limit (probably 3 hours drive/train from Glasgow) but the others are accessible in under 3 hours. All quite outdoorsy fun rather than great indoor activities but if you like walking, scenery, mountain biking etc then it might be worthwhile. Oban has access to lots of the islands too which would be really different to everything you've mentioned visiting before.

We were booked to go to Oban then Covid hit so I will definitely consider that.

Also crossing the border, you could get to Keswick from Glasgow in three hours. It's worth a look.

BigBoysDontCry · 17/06/2024 08:00

Lake District if you are happy to cross the border, Liverpool for a city break, there is an activity centre at Loch Ken if you fancy Dumfries and Galloway?

TrivialSoul · 17/06/2024 08:03

What about Skye or Arran? Or Largs area where you can go trips to Dunoon, Millport etc.

TheSixQuarks · 17/06/2024 08:06

Edinburgh and East Lothian. You could go to foxlake. Tonnes to do in Edinburgh.

rookiemere · 17/06/2024 08:40

Near either Callander or Melrose. Both lively villages and good hubs for the surrounding area.

Have been to Skye many years ago. I'm put off by it being overrun with tourists these days. Been to Arran a few times which would be perfect but been fairly recently

What about north east England? I am thinking Bamburgh/seahouses.

Went to North East England a couple of years ago.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/06/2024 07:01

Oban

JingsMahBucket · 19/06/2024 07:23

Portobello just outside Edinburgh may be nice if you like beaches.
