I doubt you will find anywhere that will do a DEXA scan without a GP or consultant referral. A DEXA scan involves XRay which means radiation and as such radiation needs to essentially be prescribed. And the technician doing the scan needs to know if there are any precautions that they have to take, areas of injury etc.

Also there is no point getting a scan if there is no one to read the results and act accordingly on them ie a GP or consultant

You could self refer to private consulatant without a gp referal. Who could then say yes to a scan, if they think it’s appropriate. I had an xray recently privately on the same day I went for the consultation.

Not a decs scan but I had a type of bone density screening a few years ago at GP plus in Edinburgh.
It was a scan of my wrist iirc.
I didn't see a GP, just the radiographer who was doing it and I was provided with a report on my risk (I have family history of osteoporosis)

Why not just get a GP referral? You can call up, outline why you want one and ask that they refer you privately.

I might ask my gp. See what they say

I refer patients for Dexa scans as part of my job.
Nowhere in Glasgow or West of Scotland does private Dexa scans and since Covid about a 1-year waiting list for scans.
A private consultant could refer you but you would end up on the same nhs waiting list.
Why do you think you need a scan?

I found one single place in Scotland but it was £250! So I ended up getting my DEXA scan the next time I was visiting London, it was £95 at Oryon Imaging and it was a fairly simple and professional process. I wanted to check whether any indication of osteoporosis as I have a family history but NHS still refused to do it so this seemed the easiest option. And I'm happy to say everything came back normal 😊.

There is or was a private scanner at the Edinburgh clinic now Edinburgh Nuffield I think. If you call them they may just book you in or make you have a private gp / consultant appointment there first. As it's the only private one in Scotland it's quite expensive. It's a proper scan of spine etc. The wrist ones are of limited utility. May be cheaper to go to a centre down south in eg a spire hospital if you're expecting to be in any English town in near future.
