Moving from state to private - missed cut off

Hi - just wondering if anyone knows if this is even possible....

my DD has been struggling with being bullied at school and the school have been fairly rubbish in dealing with it (long story, would be whole other thread!) so we are seriously considering moving her to one of the Edinburgh private schools - it would be a stretch especially with the possibility of fees rising significantly after the election, but tbh, i think it would be worth it.
She's P6 and one of the top in her class at most things (but i have no idea if that would still be the case for private school, I don't think she's super smart, just works hard) and she's sporty... she is a good kid, who wants to do well, and she's a friendly, sociable, but sensitive thing.

So anyway, my question is - if we wanted to try to get her into a private school (prob Heriots, Edinburgh Academy, or maybe Watsons?) I realise they do the intake exams in November/December - is it even possible to ask if she can move for the start of the new academic year now? Do they take late admissions? Are they all over-subscribed?

It varies. Definitely worth calling round. I don’t think Heriots ever has places, but you can try the others. We got ours into P7 at this time of year.

@Cheeesus - oh wow - what was the process? And which one did you go to? Thanks

Contact the schools you're interested in to organise a tour of the school asap and ask about availability.
If you like the school it's worth getting her name on a waiting list even if there's no spaces. There's always a fair bit of movement in the private sector, particularly at times of economic uncertainty

Hi. We phoned up, went to look around, sat assesment and then that was that.

St George’s would still do a taster day I think if you would consider single sex.

midyearmove · 01/06/2024 09:36

I'm not so keen on single sex as the bullying that has happened at her current school has been the girls and she's actually more friendly with the boys ('less drama' she says) so for her, I think she'd prefer co-Ed. Will call round.
Is Heriots a def no way? Are they so over-subscribed? It would be our preferred but don't want to get our hopes up.

Heriots is oversubscribed so id be very surprised if you would walk into a space in September but just give them a call on Monday and ask

midyearmove · 01/06/2024 10:31

Will do @Eastcoastie - I feared that would be the case.
I know we are stupid to have not done anything sooner but various things just came to light and she's basically dreading another year with the same girls, hence the last minute panic...😔

Good luck. If you really want dd to go there add her to the waiting list if no spaces available. See how she gets on wherever you get a place and you may find you never need it but at least its a back up.

redfacebigdisgrace · 01/06/2024 21:52

A lot of them have spaces these days. Just call and ask - good luck
