S3 English questions

Can someone explain to me what is taught in S3 English? Are there set texts or poems that they are meant to cover?

I got nothing but jargon when I asked at parents night and online hasn’t helped.

Looking at my child’s S2 work it’s mainly making posters, PowerPoints, reading short paragraphs and answering a question or two on them. I’m hoping S3 will be more interesting for him.

I have no idea what ds did for English in S3, his school never gave much/any homework and I never really engaged with it until S4 and he needed some support which I managed to do with some good revision guides.

If you are looking to help him with English, introducing, encouraging reading and understanding complex texts (quality newspaper opinion pieces) is probably the best thing you can do for him in S3.

If he is bored in English, unfortunately I found the same with ds in S3, his interest perked up a bit in S4 when we were discussing language and exam techniques at home in a way that was more logical to him/formulaic and he eventually "got it".

Thanks, the newspaper would help with the drying of rugby and football boots so I’ll start buying print copies and encouraging him.

I can’t get over the fact he’s going into S3 and not done any Shakespeare,Lewis Gradsic Gibbon, John Dunne, Seamus Heaney, even Robert Burns? I don’t understand what they are covering in class?

Look up the past papers for Nat 5 English and see what texts they use.

Shakespeare,Lewis Gradsic Gibbon, John Dunne, Seamus Heaney, even Robert Burns

A lot of the above writers are not commonly taught in s3. Grassic Gibbon (Sunset Song) is generally taught at Higher, as, in my experience are his short stories. We may touch on Heaney or Burns, in the BGE, but again, a more mature understanding often helps their appreciation.

We often do Shakespeare in S3. My S3 this year did An Inspector Calls, Janice Galloway, some Duffy poems. In the past we've done Ray Bradbury, War poetry, Of Mice and Men, 1984, Shirley Jackson short stories... No two schools are the same, unfortunately, and there's no 'set curriculum'.
