Edinburgh- trains after Taylor Swift

DD and I are going to the Eras Tour on the Saturday night!

I had always planned we'd just get the train home, but reality is beginning to set in about the size of the crowd.

Does Haymarket stay open? Is it worth it to walk to Waverly and be at the start of the line? We are going back to Glasgow.

OR

Is it worth DH somehow finding a place to pick us up in Edinburgh?

Scotrail have put on extra services but we normally park at the airport tram stop and go into the city by tram. This worked really well when we went to see Springsteen. Loads of people were sitting for up to 2 hours trying to get out near Murrayfield as they’d taken a car and the place was literally gridlocked. We jumped on the tram at Murrayfield got off at the airport stop and hit the motorway home. The trams run every 10ish minutes and it takes around 20 mins to get from Murrayfield to the airport stop. We’re doing the same this time but are going in early to make sure we get parked have some food and have a wander before the concert.

MadamDragonfly · 26/05/2024 10:08

Sorry I should also have said, the trains are literally rammed after a Murrayfield concert, like squished like sardines rammed and I didn’t feel very safe the last time we took the train which is why we park at the airport now and get the tram in.

imnottheoneincharge · 26/05/2024 10:12

DD is only 14 and really not out in crowds at all. Neither am I being honest with you!

Does the airport parking sell out or would they let DH only come at 10ish?

He’d be able to come and collect. We’ve done that before too at the Harry Styles concert. He might need to wait 10 minutes to get into the car park but it clears really fast with the amount of trams coming and going and people leaving the car park. It was 100 times better than battling the crowds on the train and the walk to the station.

Merrilydancing · 26/05/2024 10:17

We always walk to Waverley as at least there you have a chance of getting on the train.

Coolblur · 26/05/2024 10:30

It's Ingliston park and ride you want, not the airport stop. Ingliston is at the top of the airport road next to the A8, the parking is free, but it will be very busy because of the concert. There should be room to wait in his car though if he can't get parked. Don't get on at the airport, the tram is a lot more expensive and your DH will have to pay to park.
The tram stops right beside. Murrayfield.
Getting back to Ingliston will take ages as so many will be doing the same, I think we waited around an hour the last time we went. Another option is to walk to Haymarket and get the tram (or train) there. Again, others will do the same, but it might mean more chance of getting on the tram than when it arrives at Murrayfield. If you get the train, check the times beforehand.
Alternatively, he could pick you up ar Murrayfield. They usually have a drop off/pick area. He won't be able to park up though, and it will be busy.

imnottheoneincharge · 26/05/2024 10:57

I really don't know what to do for the best. I actually don't mind paying a wee bit more if we get home easily.

Will have a good think, any more advice v gratefully received.

Go to the park and ride at ingliston get picked up there.

entiredayfighting · 26/05/2024 11:08

lol. Name changed for this post as it's very outing. But I live less than 60 seconds from the stadium and I still can't get a ticket. My drive will be full of cars. I'm actually planning to be away from home on the Friday night, then will play Saturday by ear. Might just listen to the music from the garden.

On the nights of the Beyonce concert last year there was a huge amount of extra buses/teams/taxis available from Waverley. The staff were all really helpful

OliveK · 27/05/2024 09:15

In the same boat here, with DH picking up.

Is ingilston the best place to tell him to wait?

imnottheoneincharge · 27/05/2024 12:36

We’ve decided to go for the airport. Heard a few horror stories about Ingilston being full and getting out being a nightmare.

DH is also a plane geek and will happily watch the planes with a coffee and Flightradar while waiting for us.

OP posts:
OliveK · 27/05/2024 12:47

I think that sounds sensible. Will you get the tram back out there?

There's a side road just immediately before the airport turn off, you take the exit off A8 for the royal highland centre. Thats where all the taxis hang out there until person they are picking up is ready. He can sit somewhere down that road until you get off tram. If you walk over to Moxy hotel he can pick you up there without paying

ApolloandDaphne · 27/05/2024 13:17

My DD and her friends (all adults) are going. We plan to pick them up at the tram stop at the park and ride by the airport.

Moxy charge for using their carpark including the little access road.

MuchasSmoochas · 27/05/2024 16:11

For Harry Styles and Bruce Springsteen we got the bus from right outside Murrayfield to the Sainsburys in Corstophine and got collected there. The buses were less busy than the trams. Enjoy OP you lucky thing

StoorieHoose · 27/05/2024 16:33

I've booked a parking spot at Novotel hotel at Edinburgh Park. Will get the tram and the head home. I'd heard that Ingliston Park and Ride filled up by 11 am for Harry Styles so don't want to take the risk. But if DH was picking us up that's where I would head to meet him

poppetandmog · 27/05/2024 16:53

If you leave slightly before the concert ends and walk straight to haymarket, what are the chances of getting on a train?

rookiemere · 27/05/2024 17:14

If your DH is going to park at Edinburgh airport he should book a spot in advance.
The rock up rates are extortionate, although he will get free parking for 30 mins at the Long Stay. What I've done in the past when collecting some international visitors arriving on different flights is to pre pay for the day as it was the cheapest way of doing it.
Or he parks further out in a residential area, then you let him know when you're on the tram and he could head for the Long stay.

rookiemere · 27/05/2024 17:16

The other thing I do when going to concerts is find out the playlist - usually on FB from previous concerts. If you're able to nip off just before the end of the last song then you can get a head start on the majority of the crowds.

stronglatte · 27/05/2024 17:27

This is fantastic .. Dd and her friend undertaking an epic voyage to get to see TS so this is fab. Concert looks amazing hope you all have a great time

That's exactly what we did today! Fingers crossed it all works out.

No way will DD be leaving before TS Grin We'll just need to wait it out. I am very excited too. Can't wait for all the razzle dazzle!

I think I need to rent my driveway out as we're fairly close to Murrayfield.

There is an App for that I can't remember what it's called though, but basically people let out their parking spaces I'd be onto that if I were you 😀
