Why do scotlands education system do this? Kind of wishing we were in England where ds would be oldest in year and would be almost 19 when going to Uni. Did anyone have dc go to uni at 17? Don’t they seem really young still? We are a few years away , but just worrying about this already.

I'm interested in this too. Ds starts Uni at 17 in September- he could've started last year at 16 but I thought that was definitely too young. He's going to a Scottish Uni so hoping he won't be the only one.

Dd is a first year at Uni - one of her best friends was 17 when she started (turned 18 around Christmas) and it wasn’t great for her in as much as she couldn’t get in any clubs - everywhere is really strict on ID and whilst they did lots of other stuff she did miss out on a lot of socialising.

In Scotland you will be 17 when you start uni if your birthday falls between October and February unless you were deferred. So it's actually quite common. I'm a Jan birthday and was one of many teens that went to uni age 17. It was totally fine.
My DD is a Feb birthday and we deferred her so she'll be 18.

Thanks for all replies. Just now I am kind of thinking may be it will be better. He can socialise in halls etc but not in pubs and clubs which may be better rather than getting too crazy drunk straight away until he has forged reliable friends

My niece went to uni at 17 and a half but had to wait until she was 18 to do her nursing placements. She found the socialising difficult too. She said it had left her feeling left out.

Dd was 18 as she was deferred and found it great.

Ds would have been 17 but covid changed his path x
