Good areas to buy a house in West of Scotland

Hi All!

My son is moving back to Scotland and will be buying a family home for himself and his girlfriend. His price range is around £150,000. Do any of you have recommendations of where would be a good area to buy in the West of Scotland? As you can see from my name, I am in Helensburgh which is unfortunately way out of his price range, it is silly money here at the moment. Thanks.

The "west of Scotland" is very vague and potentially covers a huge area! Other than his budget do they have any other constraints e.g. needing access to good schools, work, transport links etc? if you search on rightmove you can do a radius search and there's 42 pages of properties between £100-£150k within a 40 mile radius of Glasgow!

I agree with pp some way to narrow it down would be good

Ullapool? Stranraer? Or somewhere commutable to Glasgow? Does he want a starter flat? 3 bedroom house with garden? Good public transport links?

Need more information

Why buy a family home when they are just a couple?

That will mean huge sacrifices in location.

Better to buy a starter flat in an inclining area that needs some work, develop it then move up to a home once they know the general area better.

You won't get a nice 3 bed house in a good area for under £150k.

Sorry for the lack of information. They are expecting a baby so are looking at a minimum of 2 bedroom house and want to be reasonably central - within half an hour drive of Glasgow. They do need a garden as they have a dog. Public transport irrelevant and schools at this point irrelevant too as this will be something they will be in for a few years and then probably move on. So, bottom line is nice house in nice area without having to pay over the odds in the region of £150K.

What about one of the quarter villas in Knightswood?

Or this is quite a quiet part of Maryhill, near the canal which has beautiful walks and lots of redevelopment.

East Kilbride came up quite a lot on the right move search but I don't know what the areas are like.

Inverclyde would give a lot for that money within budget. Beautiful location. It's got some less than desirable areas too so research would be needed. Schools would be more of a worry too, but not if moving again.

Parts of North Ayrshire too - though slightly further and less well connected.

I presume they work from home as not mentioned that as a requirement, but inverclyde well served by trains into Glasgow if work is there.

I know the Maryhill one. A friend lives nearby. It’s an excellent property in a nice area.
I am not so keen on the Knightswood 4 in a blocks. There are a lot of private renters and problems with absentee landlords not contributing to common repairs

Nurseries feed into schools so they do need to be mindful of catchment now

What about Old Kilpatrick? Schools have a good reputation and reasonable transport links ?
