Child bus pass photos

My daughter is 13 and we were getting on a bus yesterday. She got on first, and I was faffing. The driver was clearly in a bad mood (perhaps he’s always in a bad mood) but by the time I got on he was threatening to remove my daughters bus pass because he didn’t think she looked like the photo. She doesn’t look much like the photo, but faces do change during pre-teen and teenage years and there is no requirement to update the photo.

She showed him other ID and he gave the pass back but I was just horrified at the way he spoke to my daughter. It was just disgusting. I wrote a complaint to the bud company and hopefully he’ll be dealt with, but in a country where every under 26 can access free bus travel is it really necessary to be so aggressive in checking bus passes. The chances of a child not being entitled to travel for free (ie they are not Scottish) are slim. It very much seemed to me that this driver got a kick out of harassing a child, had been given an opportunity to do so and was making the most of it. Grim.

And yes I am now trying to work out how on earth you get the photo updated.

This is terrible! We don't have free bus travel for kids here but each of my kids have been allowed to ride for free rather than being stranded in the evening at one time or another. You clearly have a different breed of bits drivers altogether!

HesNotTheSunIAm · 14/05/2024 13:00

Everyone under 26 can get a free bus pass?? Is this new? I have never heard of this.

Freehugs · 14/05/2024 13:16

In Scotland all under 22s get free bus travel not 26.

Same happened to my ds, driver refused entry saying he looked over 22, there was no way the card was his and must be a younger brothers card - he was 15 at the time. We’ve had the picture updated and he still gets questioned unless in school uniform.

if you’re not prepared to turn a blind eye to Scotland wasting money, then leave? I have a UK government gateway account. It allows the UK government to know everything about me. The Scottish government has access to it as well as it uses it to oversee the £633 extra in tax I pay a month to live here. All I ask is that the Scottish government doesn’t waste the excessive tax I pay it each money. Believe me, I and my equally high earning husband are just waiting for the kids to finish school before leaving.

I guess you can afford to pay for bus travel then!

My husband and I also pay extra tax due to being high earners; for us, the benefits of living in Scotland as well as the beautiful landscapes of this country mean it’s worth every penny 🤷‍♀️

This isn’t really about the government wasting money though, is it? It’s about you not getting what you want. It’s not hugely complicated - you have a choice, continue with the current card and accept that occasionally your kid may be challenged as to whether it is hers, or follow the steps everyone else does to apply. The entitlement here is embarrassing for the rest of us in Scotland.

22, my Dd just missed out. My Ds uses his regularly to travel to uni.

As someone aged 77 I wish J could put my bus pass on my phone as it would be so.much easier.

yes I agree- nobody is forcing you to live here in Scotland, which is quite entitled to have its own services! Remember around half of us want Independence. Scotland was an independent nation, and always had its own education/ Laws/ much more.

around half? I didn’t realise there were so many fools in this country! If there was even a whiff of independence I’d be off like a shot to the rest of the UK, because Scotland would be an economic basket case for many many years. Do I want a GBP mortgage when I am paid in groats? Do I want to live in a country where each and every budget / benefit had to be cut 15% overnight? Do I want to live in a country that has inherited trillions upon trillions of pounds of debt that will have to be paid in ever increasing interest rates.

You think 50% of the Scottish public want that? Really? Give them some credit!

What?

You let your child get on while you were faffing? How much faffing is there before you step on a bus you were queueing for with your daughter?

You know right, when the bus doors open, you're supposed to step on.
All the traffic now queueing behind the bus is waiting for you to step on.
The bus driver has a schedule and is waiting for you to step onto the bus.
Anybody queueing behind you at the bus stop, is waiting for you step on?

So what freaking faffing were you doing, to prevent you stepping onto the bus with your daughter?

You admit the photo doesn't look like your daughter?

I'd probably suspect you're a feckless mother pulling a fast one. Like those dodgy diners who leave without paying.

I'm guessing free Scottish bus travel for anyone under 26 does not extend to the rest of the UK?

But you sound "entitled" and perpetually offended.

I don't like the sound of you.

Loopylooo22 · 16/05/2024 13:43

Did you know your kids can transfer to a school in England? Since you seem so abhorred with the country you reside in and can’t wait until they finish school so you can leave.

You started a thread about an ar$e of a bus driver (which everyone agreed with), then turned it into “I’m too good to live in Scotland, me & my husband are so rich”, THEN making out half of the Scottish population are stupid for wanting independence.

Message from a YES voter - you sound like an absolute tadger.

😂A decade ago, 44% of Scotland voted for independence. Since then the shitshow SNP have done their best to resign independence to the dustbin with their complete incompetence. Ain't gonna happen in your lifetime.

Free travel under 26?! Wow!!
thats probably 22 years more than we get in England!
