I’m a PT with 3 years under my belt and looking to move into a Depute Headteacher post. Anyone made the move and has any advice on how to get there? Any experience of an interviews? Any advice would be most welcome!

Quite a few PT's in schools, I have worked with have gone for secondment jobs. Maybe for a year or 18 months. I only know of one who has returned to the PT job afterwards. Most have moved on to a permanent role.

Perhaps learn how to spell DEPUTY correctly before you begin applying for positions? Just a thought...

Depute is the appropriate spelling.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/04/2024 20:37

Seriously? Well in that case I apologise, I had no idea...

😂😂😂. It’s Depute in Scotland. Why are you shouting?

@misshappycat most PT’s I’ve known have gone for acting secondments first, got some experience and then moved to a permanent role.

Apologies, I appear to have cross posted - my fault for not reading the previous replies.

Have you started the qualification for headship? I think that would help, if you have the time and inclination.

MistressIggi · 16/04/2024 08:59

Personally I think 3 years is nothing. There are things you can be doing in your own school to improve your chances however - take on high profile leadership opportunities is an obvious example. Does your school run any CPD for people who want to move up? Talking to the DHTs at your school would be a good start, see what they recommend. But agree with pp that a secondment/acting post is the way forward to gain the experience. They're taking a big chance appointing someone without that to a permanent DHT role.

One of our PTs wanted to apply for our Depute Head's job but didn't even get an interview as she had no experience. She was told to go on secondment as an acting DHT which would give her the necessary experience.
She's now found an acting post in a school that's fairly local.
That's the advice I'd give you.

There's nothing I enjoy more than somebody pointing out a "mistake" when it's actually correct - especially if it's in capitals

This made me laugh as when we moved to Scotland I read our local school’s website and mentioned to my mum a massive spelling clanger on the bloody website of the school - I mean how could they make such a mistake when they are meant to be teaching children. Yep, it was depute! Soon learned it’s not called deputy here :)
