caged eggs

SNP - food poverty is dreadful! Everything is too expensive and people can't feed their kids a healthy diet.

Also SNP - we're banning eggs from caged hens because we are worried about the chickens.

Asda essentials eggs from caged birds, 15 for £1.99, 13.3p each. Cheapest free range eggs are 15 for £2.60, or 17.3p each. Yes it's just 4p an egg but as they are so fond of telling us, every penny counts when you have no money. There is definitely an argument to be had around animal welfare but this is not the time.

This is a supposedly free range chicken, I rescued her through a charity a few weeks ago. They must have been so overcrowded to get in that state.

Don't forget they also want to ban meal deals and two for the price of three style offers as well and limit what you can get in eat all you eat buffets.

And no free popadoms or prawn crackers either with your takeaways.

Well it's quite clear that if a business can make a profit on all you can eat or two for one perhaps they could be kind to people with less money and just charge less

Poor chuck, it's ghastly and sadly only too common. She's so lucky to have you now, in a couple of months she will gain some weight and get some feathers. Thank you for having her

I am another who actually thought caging had already been banned, so I do welcome that happening.

That said , there remains a range of chicken raising/ egg laying options open to farmers with differing costs, and price points at the supermarket.

I am not an expert , but I think the next level up from caged is Barn-eggs, whereby the laying hens are still kept indoors, but are free to roam around in a barn. I say free to roam, but reality is , said barn will be crowded with hens and they may have little more actual room per bird.

Either way, I take your point Op, that, at a time where more people struggle to put food on the table, higher prices are unwelcome. Personally I really feel so much worse off, living in Scotland, than I did pre-pandemic.

I do without if I can't afford free range or I go without something else so that I can afford to buy them.
When I was 15 I stayed at my friends house over a weekend as I'd been invited to her sisters wedding ,on the Sunday morning my friend had a job egg collecting at a nearby farm & asked me to help her so I said yes without thinking. I'd pictured a happy disney cartoon type farm in my head with the two us floating around the farmyard with wicker baskets collecting eggs from their lovely big coops & nests in the long grass here and there, scattering chicken feed for the chickens to scratch as we went along.
The reality couldn't have been more different, dimly lit, long sheds packed to the rafters with up to 8 hens in cage. I said no thank you the next time The sight, sound and smell is something I've never forgotten, I won't describe it in any more detail as it's truly horrific, triggering and a life I would never support or subject any bird or animal to.
I'm so glad they've been banned.
