Teaching jobs in Scotland?

Hi all, I'll be relocating to Scotland for the next academic year and I'm looking at teaching in the Edinburgh/Glasgow area. I have a few questions I hope some of you might be able to answer.

What's the best online source of jobs? I'm looking at the Tes in England, but there don't seem to be many jobs advertised in Scotland - is this because TES is not the main source of jobs for Scotland, or is it the wrong time of year and there aren't many posts available at the moment for next academic here? What's the notice period for teaching job roles in Scotland? Is it half a term for state sector like it is in England?

Many thanks in advance .

I think a lot of young teachers will go abroad for a bit ,which could be positive I suppose

Nope, she's stubborn as hell and won't consider secondary, postgraduate or any other course / career. She's been advised by us, relatives who are primary teachers, and even school careers adviser that job prospects aren't good at present, she won't hear it.

I don't think you should worry about the future employment any more than I worry about my undergraduate history student daughter! A degree is a degree. She will get a guaranteed one year as an NQT and then she can go anywhere and teach to build her CV or do anything else she sets her mind to. Things may change or they may not but she sounds driven, passionate and focused so Id leave her be. These are the characteristics the profession needs !One of my former teaching colleagues was a qualified medical doctor and a current one was in the police for 20 years. Nothing to say she can't get a job in another field. As teachers we educate our students about the importance of transferable skills and adapting to our environment with resilience so we should be prepared to do the same!

Sometimes as a parent you have to let them go their own path. My Dd is very concerned about the job situation for the next few years but she also has back ups in mind that will pay the bills and still allow her to work with children.

I used to run brownies and often had girls volunteer to get experience. My Dd also volunteered at her old primary to get the classroom experience and through a friend got to volunteer in a special needs school too. These are relevant as many universities will turn down anyone without classroom experience.

The problem comes down to councils who to save money take on many probationers. Fife council took 168 last year. Then the majority will be left without work to take on more probationers to save money from the probationer pay to the next grade.

Was chatting to a new supply teacher today, last year was on probation, she didn’t have a job until November. She’s now managed to get some supply work but she’s applying for jobs but doubtful as she has little experience. She’s now thinking of going to Dubai.

I really do think the unions/unis/government and LAs have to do something about this situation, they can’t keep churning out NQTs year after year with no permanent jobs available.
