Glasgow school teacher cuts

Has anyone contacted their MSP/MP about this?

I know it's a council budget issue but I wondered if I should be asking all my representatives about it?

SNP talk the talk about closing the attainment gap, but the council (and by extension funding from the govt) are hitting one of the most deprived education authorities in Scotland.

As a family we're potentially affected by it on both sides as teacher dh doesn't have a permanent contract yet so may struggle to get work next year, plus 2 dcs in Glasgow schools, one with SEN.

I was talking to a member of the school SLT (as a friend) who said they had no idea yet what their staffing would be for next year. Dh's school is mostly children from very deprived areas, high rate of SEN, violence from children without adequate support, high EAL - they also have no idea what staffing will look like, having been told to tear up their plans and wait.

Apparently the Glasgow Parents' Group are protesting outside the city chambers next week but I'll be working.

There's a protest at 4 on Tuesday, outside the City Chambers. I'm going to take my kids after school.

I think it is worth contacting MSPs. They are the ones who set the Council Tax freeze and agree the block grant to Councils. They are also meant to be protecting teacher numbers, which these cuts will affect.

If it goes ahead, it will have a massively detrimental impact on my kids' school.

Similar in the Highlands. It's terrible.

DD (23) is doing a PGDE in a core subject this year and her placements have both been in Glasgow where she lives. I am really concerned about what happens to her after she has completed her probation.

Dh & I were talking about this last night - if he'd had no ties, or if my work had been easier to relocate and we didn't have dc settled in school, then he'd/we'd have definitely moved.

Some councils outside the central belt are struggling to recruit so if your dd can cast the net wider then it's definitely worth considering.

Really difficult for NQ teachers to get a job now ,And likely to get worse

Glasgow needs teachers. There will be jobs, just maybe not as many as in previous years. There are not nearly enough teachers on the supply lists at the moment so even if there aren't permanent jobs straight away, if they're able to hang fire something will come up.

Motheranddaughter · 31/03/2024 11:07

Yes but what NQ teachers need is permanent contracts and they are very difficult to get

Which core subject? East Lothian is looking for teachers in certain core subjects (not English)

Shortage subjects are maths, science, CDT and home economics. If any of those subjects she'll have her pick of schools!

Edinburgh have between 30-60 teachers with permanent contracts covering temp posts. So the internal recruiting has only just opened for Temp contracts only. They've been recruiting for the supply list so far.

My Dd is a probationer in Fife. Been successful in the internal jobs but won't be guaranteed a job so has interviewed for the supply list in Edinburgh and waiting to hear.

That awful. In England we are struggling to recruiting many subjects. Perhaps moving south could be an option?

Teaching is much higher paid in Scotland so doubt many would want to move and take a pay cut.

schoolescapee · 01/04/2024 23:13

It's only a pay cut if you already have a job in Scotland...
