Moving to Kirkintilloch

Hi, looking for some advice or recommendations of the nicest areas to live in Kirkintilloch? Middle aged now and have lived in Glasgow all my life but would like to move away as don’t like living here anymore and Glasgow definitely not the place it used to be, too busy, too much crime, etc. Still have elderly parents here so don’t want to move too far. Child grown up so no ties to schools. Don’t know the area very well but have been a few times to the town centre. Any suggestions very welcome! 🤗

I'd look at neighboring Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Baldernock, Balmore (more rural). Don't know Kirkintilloch that well but definitely avoid the Hillhead area and Merkland area. Lots of new houses but some v rough elements still.

Depends what want really. What kind of house/flat, location.

There's basically no nice pubs, agree that the area around The Chase isn't nice, the central estate in Hillhead seems a bit rough but then you've got Waverley Crescent and Waverley Park which are technically Hillhead but either relatively new detached houses or ex council houses which are pretty well all privately owned and occupied now.

Avoid the "new' flats opposite Kwik Fit/Halfords if they ever come on the market, they've been being "built" for at least 4 years now and seem to be going backwards.

Waterside seems nice enough, probably not worth paying the premium for Lenzie Academy catchment if schools aren't relevant for you so possibly the bit of Woodilee that isn't Lenzie Academy is worth a look if you like new builds.

Milton of Campsie looks nice, we didn't find much on the market when we were looking - get the impression people tend to stay, didn't love Torrance or Lennoxtown and felt like Balmore/Bardowie were the worst of all worlds with lack of convenience through being rural and needing to drive most places but also having a relatively busy road through them.

In Kirkintilloch the new development opposite the leisure centre looks decent, convenient for the station and town centre and obviously the leisure centre. Braes of Yetts feels quite a way out of town but ok.

It’s a bit daunting just thinking about moving again never mind to another area. Would just like somewhere nice as don’t want to move again, in my 50s now, not too quiet, not a lot of crime and easily commutable to Glasgow by road and public transport? I’ve been looking at detached which I’m in just now or semi detached property but looks very expensive in some places. I’ve tended to stay in the same area or surrounding most of my life which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Kirkintilloch to West End is about 40-45 minutes by car in the morning rush hour because Bishopbriggs cross is a disaster zone 22 minutes back off peak. Trains are ok, currently £4.10 return from Lenzie to queen street, regular but times don't tie in well to school drop off/pick ups.

I'm on the edge of the Hillhead area, car insurance isn't that expensive so guess it's not bad crime rates compared with Bearsden/Bishopbriggs, don't see much crime on the local FB pages.

It's probably a case of see what's on the market and visit to get a feel if you like the area/location rather than picking a location and waiting for something to come up there though.

I’d avoid Hillhead(Besides Waverley Crescent and Waverley Park as already mentioned. I’d avoid most of Harestanes too though some streets are ok. (The streets with new builds seem ok)

Adamslie and Westermains(Close to Bishopbriggs) are the best bits of Kirkintilloch imo. Hence there’s a cluster of larger and more expensive homes but there’s plenty of standard homes too.

The bit around Dobbies on the road to Kilsyth looks ok too. Quiet, so long as you aren’t too close to McDonalds but I don’t have any personal experience of living in that area, only visiting.

BlueberryGreenTea · 13/03/2024 13:11

Oh and I can’t speak for the rest of Adamslie/Westermains but my parents’ new build home there is in the catchment for Lenzie Academy.

Also personally I would avoid Lennoxtown like the plague. Some of it looks nice with great views of the Campsies but I’ve never encountered so many drug dealers/“interesting characters” as I have there.

Also Dobbies should read Caulders! Apologies. I was thinking of my local garden centre.
