What sort of things do you enjoy doing? Like most big cities there are endless possibilities, even more so if you're talking about the whole of the west of Scotland!

Stuff that I'd enjoy that you may not already have seen/done includes:

  • A visit to the necropolis (I think there are walking tours you can do)
  • Sharmanka kinetic theatre in the Merchant City
  • The mural trail
  • Catch a film in the art deco Glasgow Film Theatre (the film festival will be coming up soon)
  • A visit to the Barras market, Glasgow Green and Templeton Carpet factory

If you want to do some day trips Loch Lomond isn't far and you can get the train from Central Station to Balloch. Or take a day trip to Helensburgh and visit Rennie MacKintosh's beautiful Hill House. Or head doon the water and take a ferry over to Millport, Rothesay or Dunoon for the day (Troon and Largs on the coast are also nice if you don't fancy a Ferry). Those are all accessible by train, but if you have a car you've got many more options.

There are museums and an art gallery within Glasgow Uni (the Hunterian gallery and museum, plus a smaller zoology museum) which are great. Very near Byres Road (and Kelvingrove and Kelvinhall for other places to visit).
Dumbarton Castle is quite nice and on the way to Loch Lomond.

You could get the train to largs and go to Nardini's. Largs is a nice town.

The views from Gourock are lovely too if you wanted to go there by train. Gourock Golf Course has particularly lovely views if you can there by taxi from Gourock railway station. There are also ferries from Gourock to Dunoon, with more lovely views. Gourock has lots of lovely little boutique shops to mooch in and they are very close to the station. It also has a heated open air swimming pool, though maybe a bit of a stretch in February.

From Largs you can also go to Kelburn Country Park.

If you rent a car you could go out toward the coast and see lots of interesting things.

I always enjoyed the Willow Tearooms in Glasgow, if you haven't been there.

The main building of the University is nice too.

Have you been to the Burrell collection? They have free daily tours.

itsalwaysthesame · 04/03/2024 20:40

A visit to the Kelpies

zippingalongslowly · 04/03/2024 20:43

What time of year?

I agree that train to Largs and ice-cream at Nardini's is a classic! You can also get the boat to Millport, traditional day trip destination of old. It's nice to cycle around (you can hire bikes).

Or you could get the train to Wemyss Bay, a beautiful old station, and then get ferry to Bute and hang out in Rothesay?

garlictwist · 04/03/2024 20:44

Barras market is amazing!

OIDespair · 04/03/2024 20:47

Check out the website for SofarSounds and see if there's a mystery gig planned for a date while you're visiting Glasgow.

I bought my parents a sea plane flight for their birthdays a couple of years ago - they take you over the West Coast and some of the Islands; they absolutely adored it. Obviously slightly weather dependent but on a clear day you can see for miles.

Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre for sure! You need to book for the shows. And also just around the corner from there is the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall, Britain's oldest surviving music hall, which is fascinating.
