crashing an Adv H

can anyone advise on whether crashing an Adv Higher is possible? DD is considering crashing Adv H Art (expressive). She doesn't like the design element. She got an A for her N5 and is studying H D&M and getting As for that. She doesn't like many of the options for S6 hence considering Adv H expressive Art.

Well my gut feeling is that if she's done Nat 5 art and is doing well in Higher design and manufacture, it's more do-able than crashing an Adv H in something like French or Physics.

Speak to the teacher, both my kids have crashed Highers (not Adv Highers) though in S6, and school were very honest about what they could expect and how they'd cope.

Why an Adv H rather than more Nat 5s, or another Higher or something? How does it fit into plans post-school?

Where I teach it wouldn't be allowed as a progression route is available in the subject - Higher. The jump from N5 to AH would be also be considered too great. AH and Higher don't always dovetail/ if she started AH found it too tough she might need t be able to recourse to Higher.

My son crashed AH RMPS and got an A grade. He hadn't studied Nat 5 or Higher RMPS, just the core RE in earlier years. He had, however, taken Modern Studies Higher (another essay subject) and he was great at writing essays.

My DCs school occasionally allowed crashing AH art. Usually because student was aiming for something creative post school. Dont think there is a lot of teaching. More students sitting at back of other art classes doing their own thing with teacher demonstrating technique if asked or discussing how something might be developed for a portfolio submission. I got the impression if you just liked art and needed to fill your time table then doing H Art was easier but not so free.

after all that, the school aren't doing Adv H Art after all! So DD doing AdvH HIstory at a consortium school. A lot of subjects, both Higher and AdvH are consortium and parents aren't happy at the lack of choice in their own school.

My school allows this. As AH Art is either design or expressive it suits the pupils who have talent in either area. Higher Art covers both which some pupils find tricky as they have greater skill in one area. That is a shame that it isn’t offered at her school.

it is difficult with AHs to offer a wide range as usually low numbers taking each one so schools have to make choices regarding which subjects they can run.

My son’s friend crashed AH physics and got an A, but that was in Covid times so she didn’t sit the actual exam.
