hi everyone. dd just got results of her prelims in nat 5 maths.
it is dire - 25%.

she has always struggled but worked hard , done all homework on time etc.
school have always said that she should get a pass.

we got her a tutor for her nat 5 last year. She struggled to connect with him but we hoped shed get through with a pass.

she has no confidence left in the subject but needs it for uni.
we now only have a few weeks left and she is so upset.

can anyone recommend a fab tutor in Glasgow.??

I dont sorry but bumping for you

If you’re looking for group tuition, have a look at “A Little Inspiration “ on Facebook. Much cheaper than one to one, but obviously not as personalised!
One to one, have a look at “Online Tuition Company”.
Both of these only use experienced, qualified teachers. I’d be very wary of using someone who doesn’t know teach in schools and hence know the course inside out.
What year is your daughter in? Would it be possible to do it over two years?

ithinkitsdone · 31/01/2024 07:12

I'm looking for 1-1. Her finals are 3 months away.

Not Glasgow but Stirling - on Facebook Central Tutors. Jamie is great and my daughter got an A in Nat 5 exam after completely failing the prelim.

He does groups but will do 1:1 and does extra slots over Easter holidays and nearer exam

My friend used these people and was really impressed.

Round here it's mostly word of mouth. Do you have a local community Facebook group?

Or do what we did - ask her own maths teacher to recommend someone. DS has a maths tutor as he is sitting at around a C and needs a B to keep his options open, he has someone who used to be a maths teacher at his school but who has retired from full time teaching and does supply.

On fb look up Jane Barton Maths or PinTuition.

Or there's always online 1-1 sessions with GoStudent.

firsttutors website found us some really good tutors albeit for other subject. You have to pay a registration fee, then you arrange payments to the tutor you select.

it a bit ££ but My Tutor has been brilliant for us. I an not sure what age/ level you are looking at but can DM with details of GCSE level tutor.

Mathsisfun · 31/01/2024 19:20

Absolutely understandable that you are looking for one to one. What you might find is that most experienced teachers/tutors are fully booked by now. Many are booked up by August!
Make sure that whoever you go with knows the course. There are many people offering tuition who know Maths as a subject but are not clued up on with the intricacies of the National 5 course.
If you can find a current teacher or recently retired teacher then that’s your best bet!

motheronthedancefloor · 31/01/2024 20:58

echo those who say get an actual teacher! You can search on the site I mentioned for tutors local to you and read their profiles to identify who is a teacher and who is not. look further than just your town/city as some might be able to do remote tutoring. Avoid those who offer GCSE tutoring as that's not the same curriculum so make sure its a Scottish tutor! Don't forget Easter revision classes. Be mindful that prelim results are nearly always worse than final results. DD got several Ds in her N5 prelims then got 5As and 2Bs in the final.

Andrew at Kip McGrath in Hamilton - can be in person or online lessons. My daughter was similar but said he made maths into something she really looked forward to and enjoyed.

Nowayjose123 · 31/01/2024 22:09

He was a maths teacher and a headmaster btw.

We aren’t local to you but hopefully this’ll help…

Ask the school if they have a high performing 16-18 year old (ALevel equivalent) student who’d be interested in earning a good wage for 2-3 hours a week. We used a Year 12 for our then year 10 DD and are now still using her for DS three years later. DD got the grade she needed (and well exceeded it) so we asked her to help DS for a while until she goes on her sandwich year. It was great for her too, we paid £15 an hour so lots more than min wage to a 16-19 year old but cheaper for us and so we could afford more hours. Honestly, it’s really worth an ask at local schools or colleges/unis if you’re struggling.

Good luck to your DD, btw I got 1/120 on my maths gcse mock… got a B in the end (my dad tutored me, there were many, many tears (not just from me!) 😂)

Rhumba · 31/01/2024 23:45

Where is Glasgow are you?

Bargello · 01/02/2024 09:18

Just coming back to this thread - we had parents' evening last night at DS's school and his maths teacher said they have one more topic to cover to complete the course, and that will be finished next week. So the rest of feb and all of march will be revision time. They are running supported study one day a week after school and will be doing intensive sessions in the easter holidays, his maths teacher also recommended a site called Scholar. So it's worth asking what school are providing or thinking about doing in addition to looking for a tutor. They'll want her to pass too.

I might be able to give you two contacts… PM me if you are still looking :)

This may be an idea - my son is in s6 and does paired numeracy and literacy with younger kids (he got As in his highers and now doing AH maths). They might be able to offer something like this?

ithinkitsdone · 02/02/2024 19:12

Hi all. Thanks for your suggestions. She is having first meeting with Jamie at Central tutoring.
Let's hope it helps
