Heading up to Scotland from N Yorks in feb 2 adults no kids week after half term as have no kids or work
We have just decided this and are planning on winging it and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for places to see / stay? Heading up west cost we think - not that bothered about cities it's more walking, sightseeing rural ish /costal places, castles etc
Thanks
Second thought is Scotland half term different to England - ours is WC 12 th feb

Scottish half term varies by each local authority.

Ours is 3 days - 14th, 15th, 16th. Fife. Other places have a week. Some are the week before or week after.

I love Loch Lomond and the west coast and you can then head right up to fort William, Loch Ness and Inverness.

You might get better results posting in scotsnet.

Hope you have a great trip.

@ivegotthisyeah In Edinburgh, term dates are Monday 12 to Friday 16 February 2024

West coast is spectacular. Have a wonderful trip.

You’ve got to do the 500! One of the most beautiful road trips in the world.

Argyll&Bute holidays are from the 12th to (including) the 19th.
I'm just outside Oban. In my experience February half term makes no real difference to tourist numbers here. It's Easter when suddenly there are tourists everywhere.

Love Glencoe. We have previously visited Loch Lomond, Glen Coe and Isle of Skye in one trip. Not in a rush to go back to Skye but the others were lovely and great bases for visiting other places such as fort william

ivegotthisyeah · 30/01/2024 11:34

Thanks all @Autumnleavesss this is basically where we have narrowed it down to minus Skye
So far we have:
2 nights in Loch Lomond
Drive to glencoe 1 night
Then onto Inverness and maybe Ullapool
Any recommendations for budget friendly accommodation and eating ? Don't need to eat out every night

Can you get to the Hebrides? Maybe take a ferry from Oban? We did that just as the world was coming out of pandemic and it was magical

I would avoid ferries in February (lots of cancellations due to weather etc). Half term varies across Scotland so has little impact but often accommodation, attractions and places to eat are closed until Easter so maybe stick to larger villages or small towns.

We went in summer so camped. Prepare yourself for some terrible food - we were maybe very unlucky but honestly we didn't have one good meal and most would be on the list for worst meals we have ever ate.
I would also set up base at Glencoe for more than 1 night as there is so much to see and do from there. We visited 3 places across 15 nights - I think your plan would benefit from a bit more time in locations and less time travelling

NotFastButFurious · 30/01/2024 16:18

I would consider what you're going to do in February if you don't want to do city sightseeing. It's all well and good wanting to go hiking but the reality can be pretty grim at that time of year and you'll need very good outdoor equipment and navigating experience for places like Glencoe.

Just wanted to come on and update while I have a phone signal!
We decided to do the NC 500!!
Wow Scotland your country is just stunning!!! ( born in Dundee but lived in England most of my life)
North Yorkshire home to Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond to glencoe
Glencoe to Inverness ( picked up a motor home ditched the car)
Inverness to Ullapool ( here tonight)
Rest of planned route :
Ullapool to Durness
Durness to John O'Groats
That's as far we have planned
Absolutely blown away with the beauty of the highlands ❤️

If you have a chance hop across to Orkney for a night or a day trip. It’s incredible.
