For any fans of our uniquely Scottish word, outwith. I just wanted to share this as I really enjoyed and found it quite powerful.

Katie Ailes, originally from Pennsylvania, performs her short and sweet spoken word poem (1m37s), which is a love letter to this new-found word and to Scotland which she now calls her home.

One of my favourites and I've introduced my southern colleagues to it as it is very useful in our line of work.

I use this frequently in my written correspondence and had no idea it wasn't mainstream! Well done her for getting it out there!

Lovely poem.

I try and snaffle outwith where ever I can. I work on a UK National team. The small joys!

I use this so much and only within the last 4-5 years found out it was Scottish. How do the English survive without it!

Yes, my English DH loves using it!

I am English (husband is Scottish) and I regularly write court reports for work, and I’ve used this word on a number of occasions - it just hits the spot of saying precisely what you need it to say, so concisely!

liveforsummer · 25/01/2024 23:48

It's such a useful word - I had no idea it wasn't more widely used til I saw someone complaining about it on mumsnet a year or so ago!

Hadalifeonce · 25/01/2024 23:50

It's a word I have used all my adult life, I had no idea it is apparently Scottish.

I'm sure I've read that the exception to it being Scottish is its use in legal documents!

Yep used it all my life and only found out recently on Mumsnet that it's not used outwith Scotland
