Have just been accepted as an invigilator for the SQA upcoming exams in May. I am aware of the conflict of interest and will be telling them I have a child in S4 sitting exams so won't be placed in his school.

How does it all "work"? I know there will be pre-exam training somewhere, presumably Glasgow which is local to me. Assuming I get paid for this. Do most invigilators work pretty much full time through the whole exams, or is it more part time than that? Happy to work full time through from start of exams until 17th May which is 4 weeks but the week after that have a holiday booked. Quite looking forward to it to be honest.

In my school training is in school for one day. Then it varies how often you’re in. For big exams they’ll need loads of invigilators but smaller ones may only be a couple in. It can be quite boring at times.

There will be a chief invigilator at your school who will direct you. You may be called to work each day but it will depend on the number of invigilators and candidates.

Pretty sure only the chief invigilator for each school will get direct SQA training and then they will coordinate the teams in their school. I would expect max 1 day training in the school you work at. It's not terribly challenging. But great for getting your steps in! Make sure you have silent flats!

Yes I have already been told by my kids that “clicks shoes” are crime of the century.

Oh yes ,definitely a big no no.
I sat my Highers in the 80s and vividly remember one female invigilator with clicky clacky shoes.I think they were sling backs.

We have three high schools other than the one my DS is at within easy distance. I wouldn't be comfortable invigilating exams where I knew some of the students. I know that it's boring work - I was a poll clerk a couple of times and sat in a school gym from 7am to 10pm which was super tedious, and also do some work as an extra now and again which is endless sitting around. A couple of hours walking (quietly) around a school gym is a breeze.
