Priced out of the usual Glasgow suburbs, where could we look?

I'd like a house with a garden in an area with good schools. The schools seems to be the real sticking point. DP is a teacher so very aware of the issues in the city.

We're possibly buying at the wrong stage in life because factoring in saving for mat leave and budgeting for nursery fees and eating our budget is a very strict 170k. That also factors in moving costs, fees etc.

If anyone had a crystal ball/ magic lamp/ spare 100k/ any advice it would be much appreciated!

Depends how far out I suppose. With the exception of Bannockburn high, all the Stirlingshire schools are decent and you might get something in budget? Or look at the catchment for Larbert high. Maybe stenhousemuir? Both Stirling and Larbert are easy commute to Glasgow depending where in Glasgow you need to get to.

I mean Balfron is the closest but I'm clueless about what would be in catchment over there that might be nice/affordable.

What to you want for £170k is the question ?

uddingston/newton/hamilton/parts of EK are all ok with good schools

Dalziel High in Motherwell is highly rated.

Houston & Bridge of Weir are lovely. Nice & Central for the airport, city & the coast.

Gryffe High has one awards and is always in the top of the ratings

If you're first time buyers and still at the stage of thinking about kids then I wouldn't focus too much on high school ratings. OK, excellent schools tend to stay quite excellent but poor / average schools also improve and by the time any kids you have reach that stage you might need to move to a bigger property or move areas for work etc anyway.

I just had a look on Rightmove and there a couple in Milngavie around your budget. Here's one www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/85865880

You done need a garden and you done need a high school catchment if you are talking about maternity leave.

You need a starter home, do it up, make a profit, move up the ladder. Do this a couple of times and you'll have your garden and catchment by the time dc need it.
