Going to Edinburgh - park and ride or other option?

I'm going to Edinburgh from Glasgow for the day this coming Saturday and am looking into travel options. Usually we would leave the car at Edinburgh Park for a few hours only (to avoid car park fine) but it won't be possible this time as I'm wanting to spend a bit longer there. Can anyone advise on options? Thanks

I would take the train! But if you don't want to hermiston Park and ride is not that far from Edinburgh park and is pretty well served with buses. There are areas you can park at the Gyle (, more the business park part) where you can park ok at the weekend and catch the tram

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 20/11/2023 17:45

Is there a reason you can't get the train? It's only 45 mins from Queen Street to Waverley.

Invisimamma · 20/11/2023 17:53

I would take the train.

But if you want to use a park and ride then Ingliston would be your best option. You can get the tram or a bus from there.

backtowinter · 20/11/2023 17:56

I would do ingliston too. No parking charges, just your bus or team ticket.

It's open till late at night too

Ingliston park up then in on the tram.

@ProvisionsOnTheDock if I were on my own I'd love to get the train however I have 8 year old DD with me, i would need to get my first train into Central then up to Queen St, I think it would be easier for my sanity and a bit cheaper to drive most of the way.

Trains are great with kids! I'm not understanding why having a child with you, means you can't take a couple of trains. Kids travelling with an adult are £1 are they not, so likely cheaper too. Plus it's only a 5 minute walk between Central & QS.

There's no way I'd P&R coming from Glasgow to Edinburgh unless I absolutely had to.

Park in Corstorphine and get the bus?

Didn't realise its £1 if kids travel with an adult, that's interesting.

Aside from the money, DD can unfortunately be a bit lazy and stubborn. Last year I brought her into Glasgow and the walk from Central up to Buchanan Galleries was torturous - she moaned the whole way, saying she didn't want to walk and we had some challenging behaviour.

It'll be fine when we get to Edinburgh as she loves it there, but I'm still traumatised from last years trip into Glasgow!

Time it so that you get the Edinburgh train from Glasgow Central? Or get the bus from outside Central that goes straight to Queen St. (free with a rail ticket)

I would do the Ingliston Park and Ride. Always find a parking space and I find kids like the bendy trams.

Groovee · 20/11/2023 22:08

I'd go to the ingliston park and ride and take the tram. I live on the tram line and it's my favourite mode of transport.

We are the same with needing to get a train to Central then walk to Queen Street, if we got the train all the way. However, I had a genius idea this year that we could drive to Croy and get on the train there, which works really well. Croy has a massive car park and I think getting the train to Waverley takes about 35 minutes, so it splits up the journey nicely for us with no transferring trains.

Merrilydancing · 20/11/2023 22:53

If you do take the train, get your ticket from the ticket office rather than the machine in order to get the £1 child place.

Coolblur · 20/11/2023 23:11

I live between the two cities. I would use Ingliston park & ride and the tram, unless I was meeting friends for a few drinks, in which case I'd get the train because it'll take me back to where I live.
The trams run very frequently, and unless there's rugby or a concert on at Murrayfield, you'll get parked at Ingliston without issue.

mrsmacmc · 20/11/2023 23:31

Agree with @Coolblur park and tram ride!

Stroopwaffels · 21/11/2023 08:00

We are in Glasgow too and always drive to Ingliston, park the car and take the tram in. No issues with parking spaces, especially on a weekend.

Wittyname10 · 21/11/2023 23:52

Another vote for Ingliston, gets you to leith walk in 30 minutes.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 22/11/2023 00:02

If you don't want to take the train - drive to Ingliston park and ride and take the tram.

£3.80 return for adults, less for kids and free parking

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 03/12/2023 13:52

too late for OP but another option which o find works really well is drive to Uphall (seconds off M8 at Livingston) then jump on a train from there as they are every 15 mins. Car park is big and free.
