Thinking of a last minute trip in early December, (or maybe February if I can't get my act together in time). 1/2 nights in central Edinburgh and 1/2 nights staying with MIL in Hillhead. Traveling by train with no access to a car. Just me and DD3. She's never been to either city before and I've not been for years.

Any ideas for an itinerary?

Thanks!

Edinburgh:
The Zoo (only if the weather is good and be aware it's hilly!), you can get there on the bus from Princes Street
National Museum
Soft play or swimming at the Commonwealth Pool if the weather turns against you
Ride on the tram is often a novelty with toddlers!
There's play areas in Princes Street gardens and The Meadows
The Christmas markets will be on in December. They're not much fun for toddlers or when it's busy but if you go midweek they can be quieter and there's usually fairground rides for the kids.

In Edinburgh- Museum of Scotland is a must. It's vast and free, and has some specific galleries for children. Great in bad weather too.

Camera Obscura is fun too.

Whilst you are at the museum, pop up and see greyfriars Bobby statue.

There’s a good softplay in Kelvinhall, and a children’s section in Kelvingrove Museum, in the main entrance hall. Kelvingrove Park is just next door if the weather is kind. Also little Italy on Byres Road let children assemble their own pizza.

In Glasgow my kids love the animals in the Kelvingrove museum and the Riverside museum (transport museum) is always a hit. There's a fun mud kitchen at the children's wood/kelvin meadows that my 2 also enjoy as well as the play area in Kelvingrove park. My almost 4 year old is desperate to ride an open topped to rust bus as well so if your child is similar then that's also an option.
