Primary Schools with excellent SEN provision - Glasgow

I realise in the current political climate this may be a misnomer, but still...!

My son is due to start primary school in Glasgow next year, or possibly the year after. I wondered if any Glasgow parents here could offer advice as to which primary schools have a good level of support for children with SEN.
ie, not just ticking boxes!

My son is autistic with speech and developmental delays.

We are Southside but would be happy to travel / submit a placement request for the right school.

Thanks.

First, I would 100% recommend deferring for the extra year.

The problem is that the day-to-day support for children with ASN largely relies on who else is in the intake and the staffing of the school. This really isn't predictable, especially with the current shortage of special school places.

So I'd say stick to your catchment (a relatively predictable and easy commute always helps), work with your nursery and work with your child.

Thank you so much for this @thscal. We're cutting it a bit fine with the application so deft advice like this is very much appreciated.

Hi, not my own experience but I’ve friends with children at St Alberts in Pollokshields where they have a dedicated ASN unit. They have been very happy with the provision there. There seems to be a really good community spirit in the school too. I think a new HT started a few years ago and the school seems to be going from strength to strength. Definitely worth contacting them to see you if can visit.

It was well over 10 years ago, so things may have changed, but a friend's child was transferred from his primary school (think it was out Kings Park/Castlemilk way) to the autistic unit in Toryglen in about P4. She wasn't happy about it when it was suggested, but in hindsight, she says it was the best thing for him as he wasn't getting appropriate support at his primary school.

He went on to do well at Hillpark Secondary School, which has an autistic unit. Her only fear had been that he would be sent from Toryglen to the other specialist autistic unit which is at Govan High, where apparently there was no expectation that the young people there would be able to achieve any Nat 5, let alone Highers.
