SQA prelims

Starting a prelim support thread as I know they will be from November - January depending on the school. At DDs school, most Higher prelims will be in December whilst English will be in January. Bit worried about her Chemistry prelim as that's the one she's struggling most with. However, prelims always seem to be harder than the final one.

My eldest is s6 now and he got 95% in N5 chemistry and really struggled with higher. After scraping a C in his prelim we got him a tutor and he got an A in the higher. His prelims are in Jan but with 5 As under his belt and applying for Uni god knows if he’ll bother doing much work.

my youngest is a different kettle of fish he is autistic and in s4. Trying to get him to study is a nightmare. His prelims are just now and I cannot call how he’s done. If he can get 4/5 N5s at B and C grades I’ll be delighted.

good luck to everyone’s kids x

Our school is trying something new for prelims this year, up until now they have done all Prelims in January, but this year the Nat 5 prelims are in December and the Highers/Advanced Highers are in January.

I have one boy in S4 who is not particularly concerned about looming exams.

Our school are doing the split prelims this year too.

Unfortunately ds3 seems to have lost all motivation for school this year. He has 5A’s and a B from last year, has applied to 5 universities and is enjoying the social aspects of school. I didn’t go to the parents evening, partly because the letter stated that there would not be enough appointments for everyone so to choose carefully who you wanted to see and partly because, quite frankly, after 23 years of attending every little thing for 3 children in school, I’ve lost my motivation too!

They're not allowed to get their prelim results til January which doesn't really make sense to me. a, the kids will be worrying all xmas b, the prelims aren't considered as part of an appeal anymore, so just bloody tell them!

DS has his last one today, then back to school tomorrow. He has already had the marks back for his RMPS prelim, teacher marked them quickly as there are only 18ish people in the group. He is not expecting marks for things like English or Maths until after Christmas.

Bluepeach · 14/12/2023 09:59

My child has had all of her results back already, but did start on November 27th.

They take a wee while to mark, cross mark and check.

DS' school has got round this by having some prelims being sat December, some sat in January. So everyone has to find out in the new year now.

Mine has not done well at all but to be fair he didn't do any work until the last couple of days before. He got a B in maths but the rest were not good. Hopefully he will pull his socks up for the main exam.

The other is now sitting on an unconditional for university so I don't imagine he will be knocking his pan in now.

Vettrianofan · 21/12/2023 20:22

A for music prelim, fail for maths prelim 😬 hopefully he will pull himself together in time for the real exam🤞

Has anyone else had problems using SQA website today? My teens are finally getting their act together and looking at past papers for prelim revision, but cannot aceess the website 😫

I have one child in S4 doing prelims, he is very glad to have them out of the way pre-Christmas. I have also approached a couple of local secondaries (not the one he goes to) about being an invigilator in April/May which should be interesting.

I'm not sure that interesting is the right word. Lots of pen distribution.

Yes I can imagine. I have sat enough exams in my time to know what goes on. I said to DD I was thinking of doing it and the only comment she made was that the students will hate me if I wear "clicky shoes".

Or squeaky ones!

DC is in S4, so it's Nat 5s for us. Their school have had all subjects another than maths and English before the Christmas break. Maths and English will be end Jan/Feb.

So far so good and they're sitting on 5 As, hopefully that will continue with the next 2.
