Posted this on another thread but would appreciate some more advice. Travelling from Skye to Edinburgh today - need to be there for work and to receive guests - plan is to travel only through areas with yellow wind warnings, so through fort William, loch lomand route, past Glasgow, into East Lothian that way. Avoiding fife and the bridges. So no red areas, no amber areas. But A roads until Glasgow.
Am I mad? Would you do this? TIA

I would for the route you describe.

Barnabyagain · 19/10/2023 05:44

Thanks so much. Those who said no - is it because of the yellow warning? Or because I got my easts and wests mixed up 🤦‍♀️

Yes for that route.I'm in Edinburgh and it doesn't look to be worse than any other windy/ blustery day that we get frequently and I believe the other areas you describe are to be less affected. It's to die down later too

BFFfan · 19/10/2023 06:23

Yes on that route with caution, for work, in a decent vehicle as a careful competent driver, I would. You will only be in yellow for wind first part and then yellow for rain rest of the way. The worst is well north and east.

Gingerkittykat · 19/10/2023 07:26

What time are you planning to travel/ I think the earlier the better as I don't think the alerts start till 12.00.

I'm currently debating whether or not it is safe to drive through Fife to Stirling late afternoon and I'm going to wait and see how bad it is before I decide.

randomsabreuse · 19/10/2023 07:43

Assuming you don't have to go by Rest and Be Thankful you'd probably be ok but I'd not trust the Rest and Be Thankful route in any kind of wet weather.

The M80/M8 is quite capable of falling over in averagely wet weather though, and the usual work arounds flooded in the week before last's rain.

Currently windy but not too wet just north east of Glasgow.

RhymesWithTangerine · 19/10/2023 07:46

Yes, but only if I was going home. The roads should be Ok until they aren’t so leave soon.

Barnabyagain · 19/10/2023 07:50

So helpful thanks everyone. Think it’s the a82 @randomsabreuse so not quite Rest and BeThankful?
not leaving until 11:30 so that’s a worry. All depends on if the ferries are running today at all. I’m hoping to avoid fife altogether @Gingerkittykat as it looked like an amber warning there? Hope you get on ok.

I’m in SW Fife - I’ve seen it windier but I’d still leave as early as possible and do the route you’re suggesting. You might be alright cutting across to the A9 but then going right round by Stirling rather than straight down through Fife. The Queensferry Crossing is supposed to be much more “wind proof” than the FRB but I’d still give it a miss later on today. Drive safely whatever way you come!

Gingerkittykat · 19/10/2023 08:05

Yes, Fife and Stirling are now amber warnings.

In my area of Fife (South West) there is some rain and wind right now but definitely drivable, I've no idea how bad it will get later in the day.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 19/10/2023 08:28

I don’t think I’d risk it unless you know the roads and can leave now. It tends to get hairy round the Stirling/Falkirk area when there’s a lot of rain. The traffic cameras at https://www.traffic.gov.scot/# are useful. If you really can’t leave until 11.30 you should have a better idea how bad it is at that point.

Barnabyagain · 19/10/2023 16:20

Just to say thanks again everyone. We took an extra long way round but we made it, only hitting the rain once we got to Glasgow. Your advice really helped.
