Montrose

Wondering what Montrose is like as a place to live. Thinking of downsizing and relocating. Property looks like good value and when we've visited it has a nice "feel" but would be interested in opinions.

It's not bad. Few parts are a bit rough but it has some lovely houses, especially around the tennis courts.

On the train line, decent sports centre, nice beach and play park.

Depends what you want. If you want quieter then Hillside or St Cyrus are nice and have some reasonably priced property.

What are you looking for in a place or property?

Thanks - Montrose seems to tick a lot of boxes. We like the sea and beach, it has the train station and a couple of supermarkets and seems to have things going on. Just curious if it's quite welcoming and active as a community

We’ve lived in Montrose for quite a few years after moving from Edinburgh. I love it, it’s a nice wee town and a good place for kids (ours are 4 and 6). Handy to be on the train line for Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh. We spend half the summer on the beach. High street’s in decline though and there’s a mix of areas, same as any town of its size really.

Kids are grown up. We are quite rural at the moment so looking for a small town with reasonable transport links and more than 1 shop. But do want to be coastal so Montrose seems a good fit. Thanks

There's a great new cinema there. I'm from south London and visit my in laws. I think it's a great town. Lovely walks and beaches. And easy access to hills if you like walking.

If you are older I'd go closer to a big hospital. Ie near Dundee or Aberdeen so Stonehaven or Carnoustie. Or closer if you don't mind more suburban- Monifieth, Broughty Ferry, Portlethan.

Broughty Ferry is also one we're considering.

I like it, as a PP said the High St is in decline but I think that’s the same everywhere (although not Broughty Ferry) but you’d get less house for your budget there I think!
There’s lots going on with the new cinema, the Community trust, golf clubs, book club, tennis.
Personally I wouldn’t worry about being too near a hospital, plenty ‘older’ people around.
Housing wise there’s lots to choose from and as with most small towns there are nicer areas than others.😊

Thanks @gracielooloo DH prefers Montrose to Broughty Ferry and property seems better value. Good to know about book club and community trust - assume a place which can revamp a pool into a cinema has a decent community vibe
