Retiring to Glasgow

DH and I are either side of 50 and thinking about buying a place in Glasgow to retire to. We've got a budget of about 300k, would like a 2 bed flat minimum, and other than that still quite open really. I wondered if anyone would have some suggestions? I grew up on the North side of Glasgow so I know the "naice" areas of West end, Bearsden/Milngavie etc. I've heard Shawlands and Dennistoun are the up and coming areas but I don't know if we'll have the energy for an up and coming area by the time we retire! The parking around Dennistoun is really bad as well. We'd like to have like a nice high street and some parks, a nice view, decent neighbours, an easy way into central Glasgow by public transport and decent parking. And I'd love it to be one of the nice old sandstone buildings. Not looking for much, eh?

I really enjoyed living in Cathcart. You've got Battlefield, Shawlands and the nicer end of Victoria Road on your doorstep plus the park. If you go further along and down Clarkston Road its great and then further again into Muirend it gets even better. Lovely shops and homes up that way.

Croftfoot is also nice but don't go past the Kings Park as then you're hitting Castlemilk and bandit country. Its is NOT nice past the shops at Croftfoot Road.

You've got Newton Mearns and Rouken Glen Park - pricey but nice but further out.

If you don't mind the odd ned, going Southside towards Paisley Road West or up into Cardonald can get you better value for money and lots of great places to eat and drink. But you'll always have the Cessnock/Govan neds wandering around and there may be crowds due to Ibrox.

Best of luck with your move!

I echo what the PP has said and agree with all of her points. I'd also throw Uddingston/Bothwell areas into the mix for being nice areas with lively high street etc, decent enough parking.

You could always go slightly outside Glasgow and into Renfrewshire where there is an abundance of options; Renfrew, Houston, Bridge of Weir, Loch Winnoch etc. Also Paisley, which has plenty nice areas but you really need to weed them out.
