Hello Scotsnet

We have a week booked in Dunfermline in October with our 13 year old DC due to a family event. As it's a mammoth journey for us (from the south coast!) DC is unhappy about it as doesn't like travelling.

I want to make it as fun as possible, we have our car so can travel. What can we get up to please?

Edinburgh- what you do there depends on what she likes maybe if you tell us more could be more useful. My dc love to visit the peacocks in the park In Dunfermline, thinking of lots of things but depends if she's outdoorsy really

Moodwill · 28/08/2023 19:04

Oh that was silly of me, thank you!

He enjoys gaming mostly and likes eating out at new places, really enjoys swimming but hates walking, would enjoy going to the beach for a walk I think for a bit anyway. Does enjoy a bit of shopping (for 'cool' clothes/bubble tea etc). More an indoor than an outdoor person. Maybe indoor golf, cinema, trampoline park etc.

Sounds like the st James quarter would suit (sorry not sure why I assumed girl) it has a bubbleology plus Lane7 that offers bowling but a bit trendier m than your average alley and also has golf and arcades. There is bonnie and wild with a range of options for food inside or Cosmo buffet restaurant across the road which my dc love. Dungeons, camera obscura, Edinburgh castle and national museum are close by too. Alternatively there is trampolines, bowling and crazy golf at fountain park (all this is in Edinburgh but the former options easily accessed by train and the latter has parking to go by car

liveforsummer · 28/08/2023 19:34

Oh and the royal commonwealth pool had aqua dash assault course - need to book in advance, alternatively Burntisland a bit closer than Edinburgh has a pool with flumes and is right in the beach

MrsBlueFly · 28/08/2023 19:42

There’s cinema, indoor golf & bowling at Fife leisure park
escape rooms are popular too
there is Carnegie swimming pool but more exciting swimming pools are Burntisland and Perth
ice skating in Kirkcaldy or Perth
not that many shops - teenagers tend to go to Livingston for shops (cinema cheaper there) or Edinburgh

I’m in Dunfermline if you have any questions

Boat trip on Maid of the Forth

PrimalLass · 28/08/2023 20:07

All the above. It's so easy to get into Edinburgh on the train. Also an hour from Glasgow and 40 mins from Stirling by car or bus.

Karting at Knockhill is fun and the view is lovely.

DuesToTheDirt · 28/08/2023 20:28

Not fun exactly, and it's an hour or so's drive, but depending on your son's interests he might like the Secret Bunker.

I was going to suggest Cluny Clays but it may be a bit outdoorsy.

Moodwill · 29/08/2023 15:14

All of these are great suggestions, I want to really do as much as we can and make the most of the 'holiday' (it's not quite, but we have to go so want to really enjoy it!). I've made a list and am going to google each one and make plans. Thanks all so far!

Train into Edinburgh is a good idea too and opens up more suggestions.

Aqua dash at the commonwealth pool or Ainsley park leisure centre (book through Edinburgh leisure). The commonwealth pool
also has some 50m lane swimming sessions if they’re a more serious swimmer.
Go Ape at Dalkeith country park
go karting at Knockhill
walk over the forth bridge
Foxlake at Dunbar for more adventurous water activities
Bridge8 hub for kayaking / paddle boarding
falkirk wheel
Dundee university specialises in computer
gaming development so it might be worth checking if there’s anything there to visit

Invisimamma · 29/08/2023 21:57

The adventure golf at Fife leisure park is pretty good.
Karting at knockhill.
Paddle boarding at loch ore country meadows.
There's a great dessert shop, ice cream parlour in burntisland, that do bubble waffles.

Baldieheid · 29/08/2023 22:05

Indoor climbing and bouldering at Ratho on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Kartlng at Knockhill in Fife

Putting and fab ice cream from Janettas in St Andrews

The Deer Park near Cupar for encounters with otters, elk and of course deer

Gingerkittykat · 29/08/2023 22:07

Dunfermline Odeon is the most expensive cinema in Scotland. I looked at Luxe tickets recently and they were £20 each but only £10 in Edinburgh Wester Hailes.

You can spend a day on the Royal Mile starting at the castle at the top and the Scottish Parliament at the bottom. There are loads of other attractions (many free) and places to eat.

Christie's Scottish Tapas in Dunfermline is a really good place to eat with reasonable prices.

Baldieheid · 29/08/2023 23:00

Yeah, don't waste your money at the cinema in Dunfermline. It's probably cheaper to catch a train over to Edinburgh and go to cinema there. Omni centre is just a short walk from the station. I think it's a Vue cinema there.

Odeon in Dunfermline is a total rip off.

liveforsummer · 30/08/2023 07:33

I think the seats at omni are £4.99. Not 100% sure as dd refuses to go as they don't have leather recliners 🙄😆

BabyStopCryin · 30/08/2023 07:36

All if the above… and fish and chips in bridge of Allen!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/08/2023 07:40

If you're going to the Falkirk Wheel, then The Kelpies are worth a look.

Hoardasurass · 01/09/2023 21:12

Ice skating is better at Murryfield ice rink than Kirkcaldy and the tram stops right by it.
There's lazer quest at fountain Bridge
