Fringe recommendations?

Anyone want to share their Fringe recommendations for this year? I'd really like to see some new acts, I feel I've been gravitating towards the same old faithful choices in recent years.

Happy to start...

Shamilton, from the baby wants candy team. One for Hamilton fans, though don't expect it to be anything to do with the American revolution.

Flat & the Curves. Rude, funny, perfect if you're having a girls night out. Delighted to happen upon it by chance.

I saw a bit of flat and the curves at the Forth at the fringe show and was unimpressed tbh, voices just a bit too shrill for my ears. Might have been the sound system.

There was an African circus group (maybe afrique en cirque?) that were amazing.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/08/2023 13:45

Thanks @BigBoysDontCry I will have a look out for that.

I didn't find Flat & the Curves shrill, maybe the sound system as you say, or just different ears 😀.

One for the kids- The Alphabet of Awesome Science at the Udderbelly. Funny and informative (with lots of explosions!)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/08/2023 15:59

Thanks @Marmalady75

That reminds me - the teen would recommend Police Cops The Musical. Suitable for age 12+ I haven't seen it, but he says it's really funny!

Saw Legally Blonde at the Hill Street Theatre today. What a fantastic talented bunch. Some of their voices were amazing.

Box Tale Soup - Casting the Runes

In Loyal Company at Pleasance Courtyard blew us away - best theatre we've ever seen!
One man show telling the true story of his great uncle who fought and went missing during WW2. Really phenomenal acting.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 13/08/2023 00:56

Lena up at George Square - Lena Zavaroni's story with a fantastic singer. Take tissues, I had sort of forgotten how sad her story was.

Also Marjolein Robertson's show at the stand if you like stand up with a message and strong female voice.

I’ve seen Stella and Kathy solve a murder which was excellent.
Don Biswas, was funny.

The Houseboat Hippy and friends (pay what you want to after) . The main guy was good, his first support act was good, the second support act was dire, luckily she was only on for less than ten mins but I was cringing for her she was so bad.

Best act was the street performer Sam Goodburn, unicycling comedy mayhem. Was excellent.

Roddy Woomble, Rose Theatre, 25th. 1hr 10, £15.
Lovely music.

Mythicalcreatures · 13/08/2023 18:32

Ian Stone was hilarious - free show 4pm, also saw Matt Forde 8pm very funny .

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/08/2023 20:55

Great, thanks everyone, I will look these up. Need to book some shows for next weekend. I've seen Matt Forde too @Mythicalcreatures and agree he's very funny (though perhaps not for all political tastes 😬)

I second the In loyal company recommendation - at pleasance courtyard (1.30pm every day) - it was incredible - best thing I've ever seen at the fringe by quite some way. Really powerful.

Quality of Mercy at surgeons hall (5.35pm every day) also v good.

Also saw Seance Live at Gilded Balloon (9pm) which was really well done - suitably spooky and enjoyable.

Adventures of the improvised Sherlock holmes. They ask you to fill out the name of a new Sherlock novel then pull a couple out the hat. Discuss what they where about then pull a third which they then improvise the whole story between the 3 players so multiple parts.
It was really well done.

Spontaneous potter at the stand George street (16 and over)
Brilliant, bit rude in places.
Room split in 4 and each section gets a chance to call out novel names. One from each is chosen, then audience vote between the 4 titles. Our winning title was Harry Potter and the escape from Asboland. (The other options were very rude)

Only spent a couple of days there but looking to return for longer next year.

scrollinginthedark · 17/08/2023 21:35

Mark Simmons is on as part of the free fringe in the liquid rooms. He was really funny!

Thanks for sharing your recommendations everyone!

The grand old opera house hotel - very funny and clever and an unusual fusion of genres.

Wonderdrug - a one man talk with props, jokes, silly puppets and sound effects by a young man who has spina bifida. Interesting, funny, charming and though provoking.

Scott? Goldsmith - excellent comedian. His set is loosely based on climate change and how to deal with it.

DoktorKaboom · 25/08/2023 15:49

Hello everyone - just wanted to share an offer for local parents for the final weekend of the Fringe!
