Staying on Mull while the rally is on

Has anyone ever been on Mull during the rally in October and can tell me what it's like? I'm booking a holiday for the second week of the Scottish school holidays which would probably start on the Saturday of the rally weekend. Is it really busy and awful or actually a cool thing to see and be around for? My husband and son would definitely love to watch if they could.
I've fancied Mull for a holiday (especially October so no midges) for a while and am booking for our 10th wedding anniversary so it feels like a good time to do something a bit special. Any insight would be much appreciated.

The rally would be great fun to watch if you/they are into that sort of thing. It runs Friday night to Saturday night so you might miss most of it arriving on the Saturday. Depending on where you stay, the main roads may be closed, making access difficult.

And accommodation across the island, and ferries, are usually booked up long in advance.

Look up the Mull Rally website for more details of the stage locations and road closure times.

The island is very busy during the week preceding the rally, but that means everything touristy is open. Most things begin to close for the winter after the rally.

There is also a rally car parade and prize giving in Tobermory on the Sunday afternoon. There is a mass exodus of rally crews from the island from the Sunday, so things will certainly be quieter from the Monday afternoon.

Thank you both for the info, that's really helpful. I'm still tempted to book, if it was the whole week we would be there perhaps not, but if it's just a day or two I'm fine with that. Plus my son would love it.

Now just to decide if I trust Calmac enough with the ferries 🙄

The Lochaline - Fishnish route is very reliable and can't be booked. The total journey time (via the Corran ferry) really isn't much longer than going by Oban, when you take into account the check in time and how long it takes to drive through Oban.

Hi @Sommerled , that's good to know about the other ferry. Looking at road closures for the rally, I think we'd probably sail from Oban on the way there as it would keep us to a definite timetable but I think I'd get the other ferry on the way home. Many thanks for the advice 😊

The presentation in Tobermory is great on the Sunday afternoon! 3pm usually.. Worth parking up somewhere the Saturday afternoon if you can... Take warm and waterproof stuff, seats and a picnic! Guarantee you won't regret it! Where are you staying? We have stayed all areas over the years!

@Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets Thanks for the spectator tips! We'll be staying near Dervaig.
