Edingburgh rainy day

Hi there
I'm taking my dh to Edingburgh for our 25th wedding anniversary on Tuesday. I've booked somewhere really nice for lunch and would like suggestions for great things to do now it looks like it's going to rain. When I booked this back in February I thought it might be cooler but not necessarily torrential (yes, Scotland I know...) He doesn't drink so whisky type things not good).

Thank you!

The Grayson Perry exhibition is great

Where are you staying?

Fluffywabbits · 23/07/2023 08:37

And where are you having lunch?

The museum of Scotland on Chambers street is great. Holy Rood Palace is pretty interesting too.

I wouldn’t do both in the same day.

I've always fancied a tour of underground Edinburgh, I assume that's good to do in the rain, maybe others can say if that's true!

Fantastic suggestions. Thank you.

We're normally a bit wander around and see what we fancy but given the weather I think I might need to be more organised.

Mary Kings Close tour for a bit of history.
The art galleries on the Mound.
Portrait Gallery.
the Castle.
Surgeons Hall for those who like things grimmer....
Botanic Gardens are beautiful even in the rain, and you can spend a happy hour in the glasshouses.

I would head for the art galleries on the Mound. There are two, nice cafe links them both. Then walk down the royal mile with umbrellas to the Palace and the Parliament building. Again, lots of quirky cafes on the way to shelter.

Agree, the Botanics are lovely but the glasshouses are closed for refurbishment now.

Angels with Bagpipes for lunch is totally recommended!

I loved the Mary King’s Close tour

If it’s torrential - the National gallery on Princes street at the bottom of the mound. You can come out, cross the mound and get a bus directly down to Brandon terrace. If art isn’t your thing, the money museum in the old BoS headquarters at the top of the mound is interesting - same bus routes.

If it’s just rainy then you could book in to Mary king’s close near the city chambers (on the Royal mile) or walk up George IV Bridge to the National museum on chamber street. Camera obscura isn’t as good in the rain because you can’t see the people as well, but the rest of it is fun. Castle is ok in the rain but there’s a bit of moving around outside. All these you can bus down to Brandon terrace from George IV Bridge.

If you’re happy to walk a bit further, I really like surgeon’s hall museum.

If the weather changes, walk down to Dean village, then along the water of leith path, come off at that Stockbridge colonies to walk around the bots then along the road to the tollhouse for lunch. You never know - weather gods may be kind!

Thank you! That's really helpful. I'm going to have to up my game. He's given me my anniversary presents today as we're going away. One for every year we've been married. 😁

National museum is running the little black dress exhibition too. Mary King’s close is great but a little sad for an anniversary - very hard lives and the plague story is (shudders), I might want something more upbeat, especially if it’s to rain.

the modern art galleries are great and a short bus or walk from centre.
