Glasgow day out with children

Hi, I was looking for suggestions for things to do in Glasgow city centre with a 6 and 9 year old.
We normally get the train in to Edinburgh for a wee day out which they both love, but we keep doing the same things now. Thought I would try Glasgow this time for a change. It's been a while since I've been through that way so not familiar with the area. Won't be taking the car so would have to be close to train station. Thanks 😊

There a crazy golf place on Bath Street (I think) that's fun

Go on the subway to the West end. That's fun activity in itself! Go to Kelvingrove Museum. Can easily spend a full morning there. Also a playpark on the park. Lots of good places to eat near Byres Road. Then back into town. To the Lego Store in Buchanan Galleries for a wee play, might be something on in Modern Art Gallery.

Subway is a definite adventure. Kelvingrove Museum (?Kelvinbridge or Hillhead I think) and/or Transport museum (walkable from Partick). There's also the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow Uni (pretty quad/cloisters, shiny rocks and a Plesiosaur) and if they're interested the Hunterian Art Gallery is also free except the Mackintosh House.

The big playpark on Glasgow Green next to the People's Palace is great. There was a bike track there where you could try different types of bikes for a few pound before. Then the Peoples Palace is worth a look round, my kids really enjoyed it.

I'd get the underground just for the novelty too.

Zogthebiggestdragon · 18/07/2023 21:25

Sorry, just seen the 'close to station' requirement, the People's Palace is a solid mile away from Queen St although pretty close to Bridgeton depending on which line you use.

The science museum is amazing - everything is hands on! Perfect for that age! We also love the big trampoline park in glasgow too.

A bit further our heads of Ayr farm park is amazing! As is drummonds safari

I think The Riverside Museum, ie the transport museum will be more fun for the kids. The Kelvongrove is great too of course.

Agree with PPs about using the subway to get around easily (note it closes early on a Sunday).

Kelvinhall subway - Kelvingrove Museum, Kelvingrove Park.
Partick subway/station - Riverside Museum
Hillhead subway - Byres Rd, Botanic Gardens (Kibble Palace is there too), Huntarian Museum, Glasgow University (quadrangles open to public)
Buchanan St subway - heart of shopping district, Museum of Modern Art.

A bit further from subway stations but still walkable -
Necropolis (Victorian cemetery) is interesting place to explore.
People's Palace

Heads of Ayr is 50 miles away and not close to the train. Similar for Blair Drummond.

Agree science centre is good but I've never used the tube so don't know if it's close. It's about 30 minute walk from city centre though.

Invisimamma · 21/07/2023 21:06

City centre there is jungle rumble golf. The shopping centres usually have summer activities on too.

Personally I'd get the subway to Kelvin grove museum and have lunch in the west end.

The transport museum and science centre are also brilliant but not quite as easy by public transport, but still completely doable, just a longer day for little legs.

Claralou199 · 01/08/2023 14:54

Thanks everyone, we decided on the transport museum 🙂

There were lots of young kids at the Banksy exhibition, but it is really hard to get tickets. The Botanics if the weather is good? Lots of space to run around
