Hi, looking for views on living in Anniesland. Is it a good neighbourhood for families?

Considering tenements there but wondering if it's full of students so lots of parties!

Are Knightswood primary and secondary school good schools and deal with bullying ok? Enough for primary and secondary children to do?

Is there enough to do for families around the area if you don't drive?

Anniesland is a lovely area to live in, born here, lived here most of my life with short stints in between in Knightswood and Drumchapel. Anniesland is quiet, got all amenities you could possibly need on your doorstep. Knightswood Primary is a great school, my youngest has just left. Great opportunities, a fab parent council, they do a lot of family events, they celebrate every occasion going (in comparison to schools my friends kids go to who do not get World book day fancy dress days, or halloween discos, Christmas events etc). However, Knightswood Secondary is a completely different story. It is definitely up there as one of the worst secondary schools in Glasgow. My kids go there, I went there, my parents went there and in recent years it has become wild. The children are feral, the teachers are powerless to do anything about it, bullying is rife, first bus refused to allow Knightswood pupils to travel on their buses not long ago due to violent and antisocial behaviour and vandalism. I absolutely would not recommend the secondary school at all. However, St Thomas Aquinas seems to fair better, you can also put in placing requests for high schools in Bearsden, the west end, even Drumchapel High which is currently a much better option than Knightswood. I am in the process of trying to get my kids moved. There are regularly police cars parked outside Knightswood secondary at home time due to the behaviour on buses and complaints from those who live locally. The headteacher should be embarrassed to take a wage, she is utterly useless. As long as you're not looking at property in close proximity to the school or McDonald's the rest of anniesland is fine.

Just seen you said tenements, I live in the tenements and yes there are a lot of students however I have never had any problems with noise or antisocial behaviour from anybody nearby. Been in this flat since 2004 and no complaints. It's not really a neighbourhood, people tend to mind their own business, there's not a lot of kids who play out, but my kids do play in our shared back garden without any issues.

Anniesland is a lovely area of Glasgow. Relatively quiet but within walking distance of the West End. There is a station that gets you into the city centre in only a few minutes, or out to Milngavie if you want countryside.

There aren't many students in Anniesland. They can't afford to live there.

@Sj07 you have no chance of a placing request from Anniesland into a school in Bearsden/Milngavie. Not any more. They are full to bursting with local kids and priority is given to kids from within East Dunbartonshire. You could put in a placing request to somewhere like Hyndland - although no idea what their placing requests are like at the mo.

I live in Anniesland. I second the poster who highlighted how poor the secondary school is. It's dire. Apparently quite good within Glasgow for drama but that's quite a niche curricular area. The primary school I've heard good things about although I think the p1 intake is quite large - last year was quadruple streamed so 4 p1 classes which is up to 100 kids.

We're moving before our oldest starts primary so there's less upheaval than if we left it until before starting secondary.

It's a great part of Glasgow - the canal is stunning and such a beautiful spot to push a pram! Lock 27 does rubbish food but always good for a pint. There's a library with bookbug sessions for babies/toddlers and you're not too far from Victoria park/Temple park.

All in all - might be reasonable for a few years . . .

definitely no chance of getting into a bearsden school so your best hope would be cleveden or hyndland

I know 2 unrelated kids who went from Knightswood Primary to Bearsden Academy, and one to Boclair, two live in High Knightswood not sure where the 3rd lives. No idea when parents put in their placing requests, but it's not impossible. You also have the high school of Glasgow where you can apply for a bursary if eligible. But honestly anywhere has to be better than Knightswood Secondary.

CrossStitchX · 26/08/2023 12:14

Recently though @Sj07 ? Because since Boclair and Bearsden were rebuilt, it's been a huge issue. And only getting worse with the number of new houses they're building. It's definitely not the guarantee that it was in the past.

Last year. Three kids who left p7 with my daughter. One this year too from my sons class, although I do believe they moved up that way a couple years ago. So only mentioning the 3 from my daughters year as I know for definite two of them live in High Knightswood.

Would be very unusual now to get kids into Bearsden/Milngavie schools on a placing request without exceptional circumstances
Certainly would not bank on it
New schools were built on basis of number of students in catchment area,so excluding placement requests from Glasgow
