Yep and a lot of the same people on pretty normal salaries are already knocked into the higher rate tax band in Scotland.

LizzieMacQueen · 28/06/2023 10:13

Shit ! Not good news.

Afishcalledwand · 28/06/2023 12:34

We live in a house in the top band but I support higher taxes for those that live in big houses. If you don’t want to pay the tax you have the option to move. It’s an east way to ensure those with assets pay more tax, as opposed to just raiding income tax which taxes people’s income rather than their wealth.

I live in a band E house. It's by no means a big house, being a modest 3 bed. It's not appropriate to assume all band E-G houses are mansions. We already pay an extortionate amount of council tax, with these bands already being subjected to larger rises than others a fee years ago.

It's not as simple as suggesting people move too- mortgage rates now may we'll mean paying more pcm for a smaller house, just to save on council tax.

Yep. Our band E flat is a 3 bed, 1 bathroom, 1 reception. 72m2.

I rent in a flatshare. We're in council band G (3 room flat) while most of the flats in our block are in council band E (2 room flats). Is a 2 room flat a big house for you?

Auntieobem · 28/06/2023 13:33

Ffs. This is a direct result of underfunding local authorities for years by SNP. We already pay £300 per month Council tax. I live in a local authority area which has high levels of deprivation, lower proportion of higher band properties to pay for higher level of services required. Mortgage due to increase in new year.

Our house is band G - 4 bed detached, but by no means a mansion.

herewego9 · 28/06/2023 13:52

Our band F house cost 70k less than my sister's band D house in same local authority.

JessieJoJames · 28/06/2023 13:53

This is what happens when the SNP freeze council tax for years - it was never sustainable.

Crabbity · 28/06/2023 14:02

We’re in a band G house. House behind us which is larger and was bought for significantly more than we did several years before is band F, so we pay hundreds more a year, for what? These are not multimillion pound mansions, but fairly average valued houses in an average sort of town. The whole system is a mess, and a rise at the moment feels disingenuous and cynical on the part of the council, particularly when there have been so many cuts to services.

Wintry57 · 28/06/2023 14:23

It won’t happen in the next two years, they’d have to be mad - house prices are already falling due to the interest rate hikes squeezing borrowers.

whydoesitalwaysrainonmeeee · 28/06/2023 14:38

We live in a 3 bed 1 bath flat which is band E. We are also in the lowest decile for SIMD. The bands are so skewed. E doesn't always equate to a big house/wealthy occupants.

Yep. Band E property in cities often equals built in the last 30 years. Pre-1990 properties in my area are generally a band lower than equivalent newer properties.

They said they were going to get rid of council tax because of unfairness. They also said they would look at re-banding (although I doubt anyone would have found that it came down). Never happened.

IWillNoLie · 28/06/2023 20:36

Houses in my nearest city have also fallen considerably in price over the last ten years so some people won’t be able to move due to negative equity.

Rainbowshit · 29/06/2023 11:45

Thanks the SNP for their council tax freeze. The councils have been starved of funds for years. There was always going to have to be a catch up.

Oh feck off There has not been a property revaluation since what 1993? You can find Band C properties selling for way more than Band F
It's a grossly unfair tax and to suggest people move house is actually sick . If the SNP were really progressive they would either abolish CT or put their big pants on and do a Revaluation.
Both of which they promised but neither of which they have delivered.

Coronationstation · 30/06/2023 16:29

2 bed flat here in band F (value ~£250-300k), it's absolutely ridiculous. I think we got screwed by the bandings when the properties were built. I'm convinced they were banded based on the value when built rather than a back-dated value as there's much older properties worth around a £1m locally that are only in G!

Scottishskifun · 30/06/2023 18:48

It is worth looking at the council tax banding for your street though and houses or flats being put on the market is potential to argue it!

We were a E when we moved in ( 2 up 2 down cottage) then we found out the adjoining cottage was a B when it went on the market!
We got it revalued and went down to a D and theirs went up to a C (ours is now open plan downstairs and for some reason that means more floor space and therefore a greater banding.
But I very much doubt anyone who graded the house looked at the house as you have to make a effort to walk to it!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/07/2023 00:27

I really wish they would make the bands consistent. I know people with houses much more expensive than mine in a lower band because they were valued a long time ago. I have a very bog standard 3 bed semi worth about £200k and it’s band E. I don’t mind paying but it should be fair.

NatashaDancing · 04/07/2023 22:13

Band F for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom flat.

Afishcalledwand · 04/07/2023 22:21

Council tax should be a straight percentage of the current value of your house, as it is in so many other developed countries.

Wintry57 · 05/07/2023 07:49

But we have no existing framework for house valuation that’s universally accepted as a starting issue with that.

Scottishskifun · 12/07/2023 18:04

Consultation has opened today til September for views on it!

Wintry57 · 12/07/2023 18:44

Ah I do love a totally meaningless Scot gov myth-of-consultation!
