What's the uniform situation like at your kids high school?

Are any of them allowing shorts with this weather?

Our one was handing out two day exclusions last week to anyone who showed up in shorts and wouldn't/ couldn't go home and get changed.

I feel like in this day and age (but especially in this weather) tights are just so old fashioned. I myself have been living in cycle shorts and those sweat-wicking jogging leggings which are actually great for this heat, both of which are deemed too inappropriate by the school "because it shows the shape of the girls bum". But logically they're all out after school together with "the shape of their bum" in full view of the boys, so who exactly are they concerned about?

Idk maybe I can understand if they were the type you can shoot peas (and see pants) through, but why are we still so obsessed with what girls are wearing? And even if it is all about appropriateness and modesty, how are sheer tights and a mini-skirt better than practical joggers, sports leggings etc? I honestly think she'd look better / more modest in a pair of knee length jogger / board / cycle style shorts than the tights and "belt skirt" her and every one of her friends wear.

I remember back in school dreading this weather because I had mahoosive boobs, so I could either wear a size 14 tent that buttoned up but looked awful, or a size 8 that fit me but couldn't button up which meant I cooked all day in a jumper.

I feel like we should be pushing for a more European stance. Malta just recently switched out shirts and ties for tracksuits, for example. The primary school cares more about your child being in school (even if its pyjamas because your washing machine broke down or some other family emergency) while the high school is sending children home for the wrong colour of shoe laces. Angry

Emailed the school asking the logic behind the decision and got a total non-answer in reply, so I'd be interested to know how other parents feel and what other schools are doing (if anything).

My daughter wears a short skirt (that she rolls 😂 ) and socks as well as a short-sleeved shirt. The school specifically said no blazers or ties in this heat, which is very sensible. But they are also allowed leggings for PE or skorts (my daughter's preference in this heat.

I don't have any issues with her school's uniform policy 🤷‍♀️

Mumski45 · 17/06/2023 12:04

My DS school allowed them to wear PE kit for three days last week.

LaughingLemur · 17/06/2023 14:24

Ours can wear shorts but still need to wear ties which I think is ridiculous in this weather.

entangledconker · 17/06/2023 14:27

When the weather gets hot they say kids are allowed to wear PE kits. They actually have a smart PE kit which looks good so it's absolutely fine.

KEG05 · 17/06/2023 14:32

Ours said ok to shorts. Then some of the teachers were being a bit funny towards the girls saying it wasn’t dress code but think the teachers involved were spoken to and my Dd has quite happily gone to school in PE kit like attire with crocs 🤷‍♀️. Dressing appropriately for the weather and for learning is surely more important than exact uniform

Unless it's a private school they have zero authority to enforce uniform- all they are allowed to do is ban football strips or sectarian / very offensive items. So technically it's up to how far you and your DD want to take this!

GulesMeansRed · 17/06/2023 14:35

My 15 year old boy would not be seen DEAD in shorts at school. He'd rather swelter.

Parker231 · 17/06/2023 14:36

Non uniform school so can dress for the weather. Jeans and hoodies in the winter and shorts and T-shirt in the warmer weather.

dementedpixie · 17/06/2023 14:37

My dd wore skater skirts and long socks. They still had to have blazers and ties but could remove their blazer if they were too hot. Both kids wore/wear short sleeved shirts anyway.

Not allowed shorts.

TheCyclingGorilla · 17/06/2023 14:50

I read of a school that banned shorts for boys so they wore their sisters' skirts.

gawditswindy · 17/06/2023 21:20

Our kids have been in shorts and polos. With the inevitable 20% or so in hoodies and jackets.

As a pp said though, state schools are not allowed to enforce uniform, so send them in what you want. I'd stick in school colours so as not to rock the boat but kids can't be denied a (state) education for not wearing a tie.

NoTouch · 17/06/2023 21:47

At Ds's school, boys and girls could wear school style shorts, but noone wore them. I assume not fashionable enough and skinny trousers, short skirts with black tights even in this heat were preferred. School were also ok with ties being removed when really hot but again the kids seemed to prefer a shirt with a tie than without.

Sturmundcalm · 18/06/2023 07:47

DS's secondary emailed out a few days after hot weather started to say shorts were fine during that weather and then emailed on Friday to say forecast shifting so they'd appreciate parents' support this week in a return to normal uniform.

BigPeople · 18/06/2023 07:53

We got a letter last week saying ties and blazers were no longer necessary for the rest of term. I thought that was reasonable. I worked in a neighbouring school for a while and they only relaxed the uniform code on a couple of heatwave days last year. It was ridiculous! Teachers were in sandals & dresses, kids all trussed up in suits!
