Drylaw?

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 22/05/2023 20:35

Does anybody have any experience of living in Drylaw in Edinburgh?
I am looking at a flat there just now. I know it has a reputation for being a bit rough, although that may be more due to proximity to Pilton and Muirhouse.
The neighbourhood doesn’t really match that though, the houses and gardens are all really well kempt and look loved, streets are clean, the estate actually looks lovely!! TIA

I think the area between Telford Road and Ferry Road isn't too bad. It's not Stockbridge but it's definitely not West Pilton (which I drive through with my car doors locked!)

CindersAgain · 23/05/2023 08:10

It depends what your alternatives are.

It feels part of Pilton and Muirhouse from someone who lives nearby.

Drylaw?

@Coronationstation that’s exactly where I’m looking at.
@CindersAgain i actually used that tool last night and the area I’m looking at actually comes up better than my current street (in Gorgie) 😂.

I don't live in Drylaw but nearby. As said above, the Telford side is OK, but I'd avoid the side nearer Pilton/Muirhouse.

CindersAgain · 23/05/2023 09:55

In terms of feel, I think Drylaw is very different to Gorgie. I don’t know Gorgie well, but it seems to be a genuine mixture of people, some pretty alarming, some more young and edgy. Drylaw is more families.

Coronationstation · 23/05/2023 10:47

it's definitely more "suburban" feeling that Gorgie but there's decent bus routes into the city centre and easy access to shops.

CindersAgain · 23/05/2023 15:22

I’d rather live in a mixed area than a more deprived family area. I don’t think I was clear. But it depends on your needs.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 23/05/2023 16:50

If I could afford the same in Gorgie that would be great, but I definitely can’t. I’m at the point where I’ve lived in flats for a long time and am looking forward to somewhere with a spare room and a garden. I do love Gorgie though, and will miss it.

I guess just spend some time walking around to get a feel though. It doesn’t sound like a bad idea for you though 😊

Mamabear04 · 30/05/2023 11:30

I have family that stay in Drylaw and would say its a mix of rough and ready and also lovely people. As with anywhere (especially flats) it will depend on your neighbours. There were a lot of break ins a few years ago from kids in the area. I would definitely keep looking and try for Telford side of Drylaw like PP said.

Mamabear04 · 30/05/2023 11:38

Ps I think the best way to get feel for a place is to visit the local shop on a Tuesday afternoon. Will give you an insight into who lives in the area!

TrishTrix · 31/05/2023 19:47

I've lived a sheltered North West Edinburgh life so know the dark blue areas around drylaw quite well.

I don't think drylaw per se will be different really from Gorgie. Lots of people striving for a nice lifestyle but possibly a bit more shine up your car/ cut the grass-tastic than in a tenement!

I won't use the cycle path that cuts through at night though as I worry about getting mugged. There is a problem with teenagers driving up and down it on trail motorbikes. Police seem powerless to stop them. Drives friends whose houses back onto the cycle path mad as they can hear them.

I'm also not keen on walking up from the Silverknowes bus stops at night and tend to always get a Queensferry road bus (or drive). I do walk it during the day.

I'm generally not a "scared" person and wander freely around in central london at all hours.

Coronationstation · 31/05/2023 20:13

oh i rarely walk or run the cycle paths on my own during daylight @TrishTrix as i never feel particularly safe on them. I use them happily with someone else and i cycle on them as I figure you can move quicker on a bike!

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 31/05/2023 21:30

I walk quite happily on the cycle path during the day, but wouldn’t at night either. That being said, that’s more to do with it being a cycle path than where it is, I wouldn’t walk on the Water of Leith path in the dark either.
Thank you for your insights everybody, I don’t know that area at all so it is interesting to hear. I’ve actually put an offer in now, it’s two minutes walk from the Crewe roundabout and the Village hotel so definitely the Telford side. I’m buying on a single income but would really love a spare room and garden so I think I would have to compromise on area to get that and be able to stay in Edinburgh.

And we get those awful trail bike lads in Gorgie as well, on the pavements once or twice.
