Possible move to Scotland

DH is submitting a flex working request as we want to move away from the area we live in.

One option is that he moves and works from the Aberdeen office. We have lived in Aberdeen before and would not want to live within the city again. We have little children now and would rather be somewhere with a bit more space and zen.

We also loved in Edinburgh before and loved it there but know it's £££££ now. Aberdeen used to be more expensive than Edinburgh but I think that's changed now?

Anyway, any ideas where we could move to. Somewhere with decent secondary schools would be the ideal as our eldest will be moving up in a few years. Just somewhere we'd be welcomed and have some more space. Were currently just outside London and property prices are just insane here.

Budget would be £500k-ish. We'd need 3 bedrooms minimum. Happy to move anywhere up to 2 hours drive from Aberdeen.

We are not Scottish and don't have family there, but some of my family are in NI so we will be more able to travel there by ferry from Scotland than we are currently. This isn't why Scotland though. We just love it there and miss it!

I would look at Broughty Ferry, Carnoustie, Monifieth, then up the coast towards Aberdeen.

How often will he be commuting to Aberdeen?

For your family connections and ease of going elsewhere I'd probably look at south Aberdeenshire.
Stonehaven is always popular and has a train station.
You'd get even more for your money in laurencekirk which also has a train station and easy access onto the A90 for commuting or going south.
You'd get lots for your money there but it is quieter. Mearns Academy has a pretty decent reputation.

House prices haven't gone crazy in Aberdeen or most of Aberdeenshire so you'll get more compared to Edinburgh than you would have in the oil boom days

Go for Deeside - it’s my home turf and it’s lovely up there.

DanceBeneathADiamondSky · 02/05/2023 20:07

Thanks, I'll check out deeside

DH would be commuting once or twice a week

I’d also suggest Banchory - the Academy had a good reputation when we were living in Aberdeen a few years ago.

I’m hoping to move from Essex to Inverness in the next few years. I love the Highlands. I also like the people.

Honestly with crazy traffic you are not going to want to live 2 hours away from Aberdeen! Also tell him to check out his contract some have you need to be within x number of miles or time in them!

I have colleagues from Angus and Dundee area they all leave for work at 6am!

There is a lot of choice in Aberdeenshire its huge!! If wanting a bigger town then Stonehaven, Banchory, Kintore or Inverurie are good options with all but Banchory also being on the train line.

Another vote for Banchory or lower Deeside here. Great place for children.

Yup. I think your search area is too big for commuting two days a week. You don't want to be driving in from Perth in the winter.

Aberdeenshire is a massive county with everything from the Cairngorms to the sea, very rural to reasonable sized towns.

Aberdeen is also not very connected in terms of links from the train station. Train is great if you work in town but if you are up at the hospital or in Tullos then you are adding another chunk of commute again.
