Renovations/building warrant/storage

Currently working on plans for a full reno of our house. Will need a building warrant.

Architects have drawn a lot of fitted storage in the plans, we have queried it and they have said we need it to pass/for (sorry can’t remember exact terminology he used) the building warrant, as we need to make sure there is a certain amount of storage?!?

I don’t want a load of built in stuff!!! Obviously not counting the kitchen in this. We want some things for sure but in other places we would prefer furniture. Also in DC’s room it means we can only have a single bed and in a certain position we don’t want it in - built in storage they say we need won’t fit at this side because of the windows. DC has a 3ft bed now….surely this is an overstretch and the government shouldn’t essentially be dictating what size beds we can have?!? There’s the cost element as well we weren’t counting a load of new furniture as part of the build costs. Were hoping to make do and get in the spring or summer sales next yr.

It’s a junior guy working on our project, fine in practice. But has he got this wrong?

I looked through the building standards handbook and couldn’t see anything relating to storage but DH says he’s adamant. Want to check before taking more senior.

I think the architect is talking out of his arse.

Call or email the council to ask what the requirements are in terms of building standards. But I've never heard of built in storage being a heavy stipulation of building control before.
