Graduate apprentice scheme with Morgan Stanley or J P Morgan

Does anyone have any experience with either of these companies and their graduate apprentice schemes or just generally working for them? What are they like as an empolyer?

Both these companies have offerred DD (17,nearly 18) graduate apprenticeships with them. She doesn't want to say yes to both and then go in and decline one later. She has to let Morgan Stanley know very soon if she is accepting with them.

There is very little difference in the pay, holiday and hours.

At the open days she says J P Morgan made her feel that the position could be very stressful and very hard, whereas Morgan Stanley never gave that impression (but not sure if Morgan Stanley were possibly being less honest).

She is doing computing with them.

Any advice anyone could give would be greatly welcome. Thanks so much.

J P Morgan has the better name. I know many who have worked for JPM. Back office and tech roles. I wouldn’t say they are particularly stressful jobs. Of course, all jobs have their moments. But it shouldn’t be like front office roles, which I would not recommend unless you ‘thrive’ off the stress.

if it was me, I d go for JPM.

JPMorgan would be my recommendation, it is a tech hub. Real focus of developing the apprentices. Your DD will probably have a decent sized cohort that will form a good group of peers for the duration.

Morgan Stanley mix of Tech, Ops & Finance - less opportunities for the technologists.

Both are at Strathclyde so the education piece is the same. I'd say they would both be the same in terms of hard works and stress!

The Graduate apprenticeship opportunity is amazing congrats to your DD.

My DS has a place on the JPM summer work experience programme.m and we're hoping he'll go on to get a place on the apprenticeship.

There's such competition so huge congrats to your DD.

Thanks so much for the information everyone, oh and for the congratulations.
Rainbowshit - good luck to your son.

I used to line-manage apprentices in both JPM and MS. There is not many differences in both places.

But things to consider. JPM is a tech hub with so many teams. If your DD lands in teams with heavy support workload, there might be no time for any support from other team members and she will be doing prod support day by day.

MS has a lot of non-coding tech teams. If she is into computing but not coding, there might be different path for her in tech.

Polominty - thanks very much that is very informative.

Dd was very keen to do the apprenticeship through Glasgow Uni as she thinks she would prefer going to uni in a block. She applied to MS for the Glasgow Uni route but got offered the Strathclyde Uni route.

We told her to go back and ask why but she wouldn't. She had to accept or decline MS offer by last Tuesday so she has went back and declined with them and has now accepted JP Morgan.

JPM offered 2 days more holiday a year and 2 and a half hours less work a week for £1000 less a year. so that swung it for her.

She has applied to Glasgow Uni for their tech Graduate apprentice scheme but hasn't heard back. She is presuming she hasn't been successful with them, but she had really hoped to do the apprenticeship with them.

She also has very good Uni offers so is swaying about whether to just do the traditional Uni route. She is a lucky girl to have so many choices but they are not easy decisions to make.

Mine too

he went for the apprenticeship this year and got quite far through the process, but didn’t get it. He was only 16 though so he did great, maybe he’ll have better luck next year. Good luck to your son too.

@imperialqueen did your daughter start the apprentice with J.P Morgan? My DS has applied this year and is through to the virtual assessment stage. He has a uni offer too for Computing Science and hopefully more offers to come as the one he has is not his first choice. He is undecided which route to go down if he was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship offer and his first choice uni offer. If you have any advice I would appreciate it? Thanks

I used to work for MS, Glasgow in risk. There was a tech floor and it was one of their main centres. I cant remember what it was called but it was a big thing, very futuristic and no one else was allowed on that floor! They were a fantastic employer. I loved my time there.

imperialqueen · 21/02/2024 13:27

@Ralphiesmum she ended up getting an interview for the Glasgow Uni graduate apprentice scheme at the very last minute. Weeks and weeks after Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan. Also, I think the degree offered to her via the Morgan's were all through Strathclyde and she really wanted the degree through GlasgowUni. Also, Glasgow Uni offered a week or two more holidays a year too.

So no she isn't with either Morgan company. She has met all the Morgan graduate apprentice employees who are doing it through Glasgow Uni and she says they all seem to be enjoying it. She is also loving the social life at the Uni. Even though she works in a completely different building she has been braver than me and joined some Uni societies/groups/activities.

So she has made some Uni student friends who aren't on her course through the Uni groups she is in and has a good social life with them.

She seems happy with her choice, she was really indecisive for months over what to do, proper Uni or the graduate apprentice scheme but decided she wanted the wages and seems very happy with her decision.

If its any help to your son, she said there are 16 students and her doing the uni placement part together, 14 are from other companies, She was quite surprised that a lot of the other employees already had degrees in other fields so are a little bit older than her. She said when she was at the interviews it was all teenagers like herself, she said some were the year younger than her (end of 5th year).

Good luck to your son, if you have anymore questions please ask away. Sorry I don't have any more info on the Morgans.

@imperialqueen thanks for your reply, really helpful. I wasn’t aware of the Glasgow uni apprenticeship, the only one available on their website just now is Morgan Stanley (Barclays is closed). What month was your DD apprenticeship posted or is she aware of any coming up for this year? Sorry for all the questions, is it software engineering she is studying?

TooOldForThisNonsense · 21/02/2024 23:40

That sounds great for your daughter well done her.

my son has decided against applying for GA schemes again as he isn’t sure about settling on one thing so early on so he’s going to be doing a degree in maths and computer science instead.
