Why doesn't Scotland have an Alton Towers equivalent?

I have just taken my 13 year old thrill loving daughter to her favourite place, Alton Towers. We travelled by coach and although a fun weekend was had, it was a brutal amount of travel.
It made me wonder why Scotland doesn't have its own theme park. M&Ds in Glasgow doesn't really compare. Is it our weather? It's just a shame really, as it would bring employment and money to Scotland.
Or is there some glaringly obvious reason that we don't have one?

It would be closed most of the time due to the poor weather

Scotland has got real adventure - we love all the activities around aviemore, no rollercoaster needed. Plus we travel my motorcycle which has the advantage of being transport with an added amount of thrill and jeopardy Grin

What's the thing about the weather ?

Its northern Britain not the antarctic!

awmum2b · 04/04/2023 14:33

@Staggie Ryanair, Edinburgh to Billund. Flight out was early doors Thursday so that was a bit of a pain. Meant we were there for 10am though. Flew back yesterday at teatime. There's a place called Lalandia on the doorstep which is a bit like out Center Parcs. Or the Lego Hotels are in abundance.

Weather is very much like here though, soaked on Thursday, Cloudy on Friday, and cold but sunny Sat/Sun.

Going by my college lecturer Glasgow has a very high driving rain index average rainfall x average wind speed.

Summer can be very short, nobody wants to wander round a theme park in the rain, or a cold windy day. A holiday in Scotland involves planning for 4 seasons.

London, Paris and even Billuand can be fairly sure of getting a decent dry summer. Not the case for Glasgow although having said that Edinburgh does get dryer weather than Glasgow

Thanks! I've had a look. Looks fab.

I don't know the reason but it actually really pisses me off that we don't.

There should be a Harry Potter world in the Highlands. Missed a trick there.

Why don't they have a smaller version of the Harry Potter Experience place, in or near Edinburgh? That would be great.

newbiebewbie · 05/04/2023 17:40

Look at the objections that thing at Loch Lomond got. People don’t want it.

Sugarfree23 · 05/04/2023 17:46

Loch Lomond wouldn't be the right place for a theme park either. I don't know why Flamingo Land seem to want to put it here.

The traffic at the Balloch roundabout has been a nightmare for the last 20 years at least. It's on the wrong side for Glasgow to attract people from the North and Edinburgh.

Mrsjayy · 05/04/2023 17:48

Loch lomond Is a national park isn't it ? I can see why it would be rejected .

Sugarfree23 · 05/04/2023 17:50

Yes. It's National Park, that's another reason why it's not the right place for a theme park.

Is there not one at strathclyde park? or is that a bit rubbish?

It's shit. Was at M&Ds last year for one of the DC's birthdays. Have no plans to return.

I don’t think the PP was being serious about HP..

Let's join the queue for Calvinist world, long walks and cold showers daily

MelsMoneyTree · 05/04/2023 21:31

I actually quite like M&Ds at Christmas with the ice rink, etc. There's a cute little train. Our DCs used to love it.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 05/04/2023 21:39

Came on here to second the Landmark Centre. It's not exactly on a par with Alton Towers but it has its own charm. Very good day out with lots of different things to do.

It's always been shit I've taken my 2 when they were younger and it's awful you are well waiting on the shows/fairground coming to your local park than going to M&Ds.

Pls if it was like Alton towers sone of their rides can’t operate in rain and/or wind

Sugarfree23 · 06/04/2023 18:59

@Morph22010 exactly not to mention if you've been in Alton Towers on a drizzly Saturday near end of season its empty.
My friend and I rode Air (I think might be call Oxygen now) 3 times in a row, we got of the first time straight back on, the second time the guy asked are you going again? And we ever even got off. People que for a couple of hours for it in summer.

Oblivion regularly goes off in the rain.

Riapia · 06/04/2023 19:52

Population density.
Too few people to make the queues long enough. Imagine not having to wait an hour between rides. People would be ready to go home by lunchtime.

TaLooLaBell · 06/04/2023 20:05

M n Ds is a dump

Air is now galactica

Sugarfree23 · 06/04/2023 20:53

Thanks It was a while ago I was there with friends, was back last year with my kids and noticed the name change but couldn't quite remember what they'd changed it too.
Fantastic ride but my oldest wasn't up for it and the que was massive.

But damp drizzly day Alton Towers was empty and we get more damp drizzly days than they get even in the Midlands.
