Glasgow maternity hospitals

Hi everyone,

I posted a couple of weeks ago about opinions on best maternity units in Edinburgh as we were due to move there and I got some brilliant advice, however we will now be moving to Glasgow and I'm just looking for the same really! I'm due my second in October, I had my first in London but know nothing about which are the best hospitals. We'll likely be living fairly centrally in Glasgow if this helps.

There’s literally 2 choices: the princess royal or the queen elizabeth .

if you’re going to be living in central Glasgow then the PRM will be the one for you. Travelling to the south side at the moment is a nightmare unless it’s the middle of the night

You might want to consider the RAH at Paisley - it has a community midwife unit that is very good.

I would base your decision on whether you are going to be north or south of the river.

if you are going to be north but not the west end go to the royal, west end/south go to the queen Elizabeth as the m8 is a complete disaster at the moment unless as the poster up thread mentioned, you go in the middle of the night!

The only caveat would be if it is high risk for the baby then I would say the queen Elizabeth which has the sick kids attached.

Having had my first at the Queen Elizabeth and second at the RAH midwife unit in Paisley, I'd highly recommend going to the RAH. Even their labour wards (as opposed to the midwife unit) felt a lot calmer than Queen Elizabeth and the midwives listened to my concerns.
Before COVID at least, you could ask to visit the midwife unit to see what it's like. You could call to see if that's still a possibility?

I echo this 100%.

Or would you consider a home birth?

Absolutely same experience.

Hiya! My due date is in a few weeks and I'm down to go to Queen Elizabeth. However the midwives keep saying that QE is oversubscribed and they're contacting people asking if they'll change hospital. Would you recommend Royal or Paisley??+

Badwvlf · 05/02/2024 12:38

Hiya, I hope your birth experience went really well! Is there any chance you'd be open to sharing which hospital you went with in the end? x

Lemonandginger1 · 05/02/2024 15:53

Nearly six months down the line, I'm still happy that we ended up at the Queen Elizabeth. It was a Monday afternoon when I went in, so maybe less busy than the weekend. All the midwives and care assistants were brilliant. Couldn't fault them at all x

Whichcity · 05/02/2024 16:53

Of course! I went with Queen Elizabeth and it was absolutely wonderful!

sorry posted too soon, but I had a planned c section at Queen Elizabeth and I couldn’t fault them. They were a midwife short the day after my c section when I was on the postnatal ward but you couldn’t tell - they were attentive, caring and clearly loved their job. I was there Friday - Saturday x
