Sorry but a 12 month ban! Is it posh justice!
I used to live near bearsden, 1 perdon killed and 3 othwrs setiously injured, does having money make you above the law!

I have just ranted about this to my DH. I can’t imagine how the families affected by
this must feel. This is not justice!

Tratjymp · 01/03/2023 22:42

And some community work.

It's usual to be jailed for a road traffic accident.

catzrulz · 01/03/2023 22:44

Seriously, seriously flawed justice.
You couldn't make this up.

IkBenDeMol · 01/03/2023 22:48

I still do live there and the council are currently digging up the road to put in traffic calming to make sure this can’t happen again. I don’t know the family involved, or the family of the driver.

it’s fairly clear that the “Bearsden housewife Range Rover” has been chosen to elicit exactly the response it’s got - those “posh” people getting away with murder. Would be interesting to see what the average sentence is. Nothing to be gained by locking her up though, she’s not violent.

IkBenDeMol · 01/03/2023 23:07

It’s really not usual to be jailed. Just Google “sentence causing death by careless driving” and hit the news tab. Loads of stories of suspended sentences, fines or driving bans.

but “Glasgow pensioner gets driving ban” doesn’t get people frothing. The idea that people in Bearsden are treated differently by the criminal justice system does.

Rae36 · 02/03/2023 10:36

I'm not sure I see the point of jailing her. She has to live with herself every day knowing what she did, and with her family and neighbours knowing what she did. I'd never drive again, and I'd struggle with guilt every day for the rest of my life.
She should be banned for longer than 12 months imo. Probably for life.

user567543 · 02/03/2023 10:51

It seems like it's more to do with the conviction being careless rather than dangerous driving than anything else - the article doesn't say but presumably there are reasons other than poshness why she didn't meet the criteria for dangerous driving

IkBenDeMol · 02/03/2023 11:18

I think she’s said she hasn’t driven since the crash and has no intention off driving again which is the right decision.

Sceptic1234 · 02/03/2023 11:23

The really posh people live in Milngavie ......

Harry Clarke wasn’t jailed for killing 6 with his bin lorry nor for driving whilst suspended in 2015

AmeliaEarhart · 02/03/2023 11:43

I think the Range Rover bit is relevant; if it had been a smaller, lighter vehicle the result of the collision might have been less devastating. It’s good to have the occasional reminders that SUVs pose more of a danger to pedestrians, and that peoples objections to them are based on more than just envy (as is often suggested on here).

I can never understand why killing someone doesn’t result in an automatic lifetime ban. Driving should be a privilege earned and kept by responsible behaviour.

Well exactly. And in his case wasn't it shown that he knew he had health issues which meant he shouldn't be driving, and did it anyway?

It's really clear that this headline has been written to whip up froth - and it's working.

Range Rover - posh people with flash cars
Bearsden - posh people, probably Tories 🙄
housewife - probably never worked a day in her life.

Can't believe that people can't see past that headline to be honest. And the woman is 68 - surely "retired" is a better description than "housewife"?

That crossing point if anyone knows it was an accident waiting to happen. People use it as a cut-through to avoid the lights at the cross. long straight bit, bad corner, long straight bit. And the cross for people walking down towards the church and Cross is right on the bad corner. Very glad that they are finally putting in traffic calming measures. Just so sad it took a death to do so.
