Edinburgh S5 work experience suggestions please?

DS is in S5 and after the highers they have a week for work experience in June, but DPs are meant to sort it out for them or they sort it out themselves.

He's hoping to do Business Studies at Uni, possibly along with Sports. I did think he could maybe do the Lifeguard training course for a week at Portobello as that will set him up for summer jobs, but have yet to discuss with him.

Apparently a lot of work places don't let DCs in any more, so wondered if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions . He's also not averse to doing an actual paid job and then continuing part time into the Summer, if such a thing existed.

Check out how well Lifeguard course translates to paid work. One of my neighbours kids did the course but "guaranteed job" was a few hours a week in any of the areas pools.

DD did a Morgan Stanley experience week (hated it but helped rule out as a career). My DSes did hotel and care home work experience. Hotel one got an immediate job offer (kitchen porter). Care home one got told to get back in touch when he was 18. Care home one loved his week. The old folk were a laugh (he helped with entertainment).

Thanks @SandyIrvin .

With the lifeguard course I was more thinking if DS wanted to work at camp Bunac or similar in the future, the lifeguard course would set him in good stead.
i haven't shared the idea with him yet for fear of the outright refusal which most of my plans seem to get.
A week at a hotel or something would be fantastic, but not sure how he'd get a job there.

Not sure where you’re located but for sport I would have thought the new Meadow Bank sports centre would be a good bet? It’s big and modern, community focused so they should be up for supporting someone to get good work experience. They seem to have a lot of full time and part time jobs at £10 an hour with lots of perks. It should give a good cross section of working in sports, the commercial sector and the public sector.

Edinburgh leisure were advertising lifeguard jobs with the training paid for until fairly recently. The pools were really struggling staff because no one did the training during lockdown and it’s often a job filled by students. Try Edinburgh leisure, David Lloyd, village hotel gym, westwoods etc as they’ll all have gym managers and people who run the business if he’s interested in that side of things.

The best thing your son can do is research and investigate it for himself. That will give him a good understanding of whats available and thats good experience in itself. Best of luck to him, its a tough market out there.

We’ve also got this problem. Expectation seems to be that the parents sort it out at their work, but most employers no longer support that.
