I am looking into West End Glasgow Secondary Schools for my adopted son. Huge Decision as he really is not academic but very sporty. Hyndland, nitre dame or hillhead??

Due to the noughties mini baby boom hardly anyone will get a placing request so he'll go to whichever catchment school you have.

Yes but we will be moving to west end. Thank you for replying Xx

I’d say Hyndland as they have on-site sports pitches.

Hillhead have remote pitches which they travel to for outdoor PE. Both are secular, Hyndland perform better on exam league tables but have a more affluent catchment. Hillhead has a mix of affluent and less-affluent catchment and this reflects in exam performance but is still a good school.
Notre Dame is Roman Catholic, and until very recently an all girl’s school so will have a high proportion of girls : boys, if that is something relevant to you. High performing on exam league tables though.

High performing on exam league tables though.

That's likely to change as it becomes less 'selective'.

PicklesAndTequila · 23/02/2023 13:59

Dd went to Hyndland, she and I were both happy with it, particularly pastoral which was really important.

Dubonet · 25/02/2023 15:48

Notre Dame when it was girls only wasn't selective, it was below the roll, the only high school in the area that was. It would take any girls who wanted to attend, regardless of ability or even living in Glasgow council areas.

Dubonet · 25/02/2023 15:52

My point being, that I don't think the exam performance will go down, its boys from the good primary schools around it that are attending, with a phased entry, so if anything, there may be an uplift in its performance.

I'm a parent who lived in the area with a child who went to Notre Dame Primary. If still living in the area, it would be my choice for my sons.

Hence the inverted commas.

So why would its high performance on league tables change because there are now boys attending?

gawditswindy · 25/02/2023 19:42

There were a number of families who put in placing requests to the school for their daughter purely because it was single sex. Attainment among those whose parents play an active role in their education is traditionally higher. Girls' attainment is also traditionally higher than boys'. It's not just me that anticipates a slide, it's a pretty common assumption. It's not something figured on an individual basis, more a general shift.

I could wrong - I'm certainly not going to start a fight about it, but it's a viewpoint I've also heard from others which I think is likely to be correct.

Dubonet · 25/02/2023 21:35

I guess time will tell, it will be a few years before boys are sitting Highers there.

I dont agree though, its in the same catchment area as Hyndland a mixed sex school which is higher in the tables. Also the parents in the area are hugely invested in their children's education, so much so that they fought for years to get Notre Dame High's coeducational. I was one of the primary parents who supported them and helped with the campaign.

gawditswindy · 25/02/2023 22:05

I hope it works out for you all. Catchment also really important. Smile

We moved, so no longer our catchment school but I'm really happy the change happened, I think it will prove to be a change for the better.

Hyndland is non uniform if that's something to be considered, huge plus for us.
Also OP you mentioned your Dd is adopted, does that come under LAC, as if so catchment isn't an issue.
It's how I got Dd in, and I'm way, way, as in another county out of catchment.
