Sorry I don't know Wick but hopefully someone who does will be along soon.
Just check if the house is "offers over". Scotland has an offers over system and normally you can expect to pay 10-20% over depending on the area..
People sometimes get caught out with this as they think house seems reasonably priced.

Kissmycousinkate · 12/02/2023 08:44

No, awful grey place. Some nice houses, but some very rough sections no work no shops. Sorry to anyone from there but it's a grim sad place. Where abouts are you now? Have you visited?

Christmascracker0 · 12/02/2023 08:51

Yeah Wick wouldn’t be my first choice. It’s grey, cold and your nearest city is Inverness 2 hours away. I would not expect the value of the house to increase by much.

Where are you now? Have you been to Wick?

Randobelia · 12/02/2023 08:52

Why are you picking random places? Have you been to Wick? It's not somewhere to move to on a whim for various reasons.

Fundays12 · 12/02/2023 08:54

Omg no most people I know have moved south to Inverness from wick. No work, small community and miles from Inverness

FatSealSmugSoup · 12/02/2023 09:20

Isn’t your highest priority “how can I be part of this community?” Rather than “will my money pot grow bigger?”.

honestly, the last thing we need in the Highlands and Islands are “older” people moving in putting pressure on the already struggling care facilities and pricing out the very people they expect to wipe their arses.

I understand that might be an unpopular opinion and I give no shiny fucks.

I would at the very least visit Wick - it’s going to be VERY different to even rural England.

JRR · 12/02/2023 09:29

Omg it sounds that Wick is not a nice place

Christmascracker0 · 12/02/2023 09:33

It’s a fine place to live it’s just not where many people would choose to live 😂

Randobelia · 12/02/2023 09:34

Wick has good and bad aspects same as everywhere else. How old are you? You sound very flippant.

Shopper727 · 12/02/2023 09:34

Perhaps visit?…
it’s not somewhere i would want to move, can’t see you getting much back on a house either but just because a few folk on here don’t like it you’re happy to take their word and rule it out?…
why Wick? Of all places it’s very far away from anything and jobs aren’t really easy to get, I don’t know much else about it without investigating - we used to go on way to boat to Orkney. What about something within commute distance to Inverness? Lots of pretty places along the coast that aren’t quite as remote?

JRR · 12/02/2023 09:50

Thanks for all your replies

Wick is my nearest town, housing prices are cheap because of the location, lack of infrastructure, job opportunities etc etc. If you want to buy a property to make money this is not the place.
If you want to move here, as others have said, visit. Or you'll be stuck trying to sell the place a year later like all the others who move up with grand ideas of the Highlands but then move up and discover that they don't like not having a variety of supermarkets/the shit wind/not much to do etc.

Calmdown14 · 12/02/2023 12:40

It's largely what you'd expect for a place so remote.
Do you understand the geography? What are you comparing it to? As in where would you be moving from?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 18/02/2023 22:30

@FatSealSmugSoup was just going to say the very same thing, I noticed op asked about D&G as well and my first thought was what age are they? I work in community nursing and lots come to retire because they mistakenly think the care is better but there are no care at home packages available or at least a years wait/waiting on someone to die to get one and very few residential beds, this needs to be communicated to people somehow that rural area are not able to provide quick care

FatSealSmugSoup · 19/02/2023 05:03

Ack - a few hard winters usually see them off. And when I say winter, it’ll be winter here until May.

ChrissyShenkle · 21/02/2023 15:33

I've heard it described as the arshole of the North

torquewench · 21/02/2023 15:43

Why don't you actually go up there and see for yourself?

SongforWhoever · 21/02/2023 15:44

My cousin moved around a fair bit in the Highlands and lived in Wick for several years. I understood that it was quite isolated with a long journey to get to Inverness or anywhere else, as well as not a great deal to do there.

ChaToilLeam · 21/02/2023 15:53

Housing is cheap there but don’t expect to make money off it. It’s a remote community, has its good and bad sides like anywhere else, but there’s not a lot of work up there, the weather is awful and you don’t have that many options for shopping, entertainment, etc. Over 2 hours drive to Inverness, more like 4 hours by train.

Think again if an increase in property values is your man motivator.
