Scottish teachers strikes

museumum · 28/01/2023 10:57

How have other Scots found the teachers strikes?
I’m seeing a lot of stress from English parents I know on Fb as well as on mn but it seems to me in my bit of Scotland parents have said “fair dos” to the teachers and just got in with things/arrangements quietly.

I’m not sure this is necessarily good for the teachers cause….

interested to hear from other Scots around the country….?

Thanks

Badbudgeter · 28/02/2023 11:15

Thanks for that @Margarita45

Totally sick of these strikes and I as a secondary teacher and member of the EIS would have taken the deal. As a result of not being consulted the majority of my department are in today and/or tomorrow. I'm at home with the kids today and will go in tomorrow. Makes the whole thing a total sham but I'm angry and out of pocket. I'm not surprised that parents are fed up too...

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/02/2023 12:01

Are the membership feeding this back, @olivegreens ? The leadership is there to reflect the wishes of their members, surely?

tigger1001 · 28/02/2023 13:45

So in my area the secondary schools will be closed 2 days of the last week before the kids go off on study leave. It's just ridiculous. It's not hurting anyone other than the kids who can't yet vote and teaching them that education isn't important.

Any sympathy I had for the strikes is gone.

Shelefttheweb · 28/02/2023 16:21

I agree this is hurting the kids. It was the same in lockdown - kids education, development and mental health was expendable.

MountedbyHarryWindsor · 28/02/2023 16:25

My DD has spent most of the past 2 weeks crying with stress due to upcoming exams and folio completion etc. Not being in school means she is not able to get or ask for help. I'm extremely pissed off. I emailed my MSP (not SNP) who never bothered to reply.

SirChenjins · 28/02/2023 16:26

And from a profession which purports to be massively concerned about pupils’ education, development and mental health…

Absolutely no sympathy for teachers whatsoever now.

You have a bunch of MSPs so you might have a better response from another. www.writetothem.com

Feel so sorry for the kids, particularly those in exam years

As if they haven’t suffered enough with Covid lockdowns

MountedbyHarryWindsor · 28/02/2023 17:57

and no idea what the SQA contingency plans are and when/if they will be implemented. It would be good to have sight of the plans.

Elmo22 · 28/02/2023 19:22

Sorry, I was just scrolling through this thread. I am a striking teacher (didn’t want to strike this time but anyway…) I can reassure you that we do NOT get paid if we are on strike. I don’t know anyone in any job who does!!

I applied for a hardship fund payment from my union because of my unusual circumstances and was awarded the grand total of £30. By the end of this, some of us could have lost out on a great deal of money - it is already many hundreds of pounds for me 😞 Please don’t think that people on strike are still able to collect a wage.

Elmo22 · 28/02/2023 19:25

WhereAreMyAirpods · 24/02/2023 09:41

I am so cross that the Union are paying teachers to stand on the pavement in the sunshine and have a wee chat, then piss off home for the rest of the day.

Sorry, that was in reply to this! I am fairly new to posting!

Flossieflamingo · 28/02/2023 19:31

Any sympathy I had is gone. Pupils are stressed, courses won’t be finished - they just didn’t need this after the covid years. The people being punished most in all of this are pupils, they have no vote. My
son now thinks that teachers don’t care about their pupils. Sad times. I am feeling pretty angry about this today.

Flossieflamingo · 28/02/2023 19:34

@MountedbyHarryWindsor this is what I am thinking. When is anyone actually going to think of the kids. All the SG can say is that they have organised home learning for strike days. They don’t need more of that!

Are you in one of the targeted constituencies? That was what this was in reference to.

MountedbyHarryWindsor · 28/02/2023 19:52

home learning? Who says that? Certainly never been offered anything in my LA. Do they expect us to figure it out ourselves?

Motheranddaughter · 28/02/2023 19:57

My understanding is that the striking teachers in the targeted areas are being paid by the Union

No, no one's said that?

ProseccoOnIce · 28/02/2023 20:03

My daughter (P5) got some home learning to do. Bloody nerve! They can fuck off with that. I work full time in the NHS & am having to use annual leave to cover strike days. I'm not doing it.

Flossieflamingo · 28/02/2023 20:04

@MountedbyHarryWindsor The home learning was in reference to information put out via social media by the Scottish government in regard to online resources for learning. Mostly aimed at senior phase pupils, I think.

ProseccoOnIce · 28/02/2023 20:10

And the next set of strike days are days when we are so short-staffed that I can't take time off, with no option to WFH.

Elmo22 · 28/02/2023 20:10

Shelefttheweb · 28/02/2023 19:35

Ah, I see. No, I am not. And I agree that sympathy for teachers is waning. I hope that it is all settled soon, as a parent and a teacher. I thought that the last pay offer was fair.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/02/2023 20:11

@Elmo22 it was confirmed last week that teachers striking last week in the targetted action in 4 constituencies WERE GETTING PAID by the union.

Teachers on national action today/tomorrow are not being paid.

Applogies. I thought you were referring to today and tomorrow.
