Troon

Hi! I'm planning on moving from England to Troon in Ayrshire and would like some advice about the town. I went there last Summer for a few days, spent some time in the main town, walked on some of the walking trails, visited the historic sites, etc and really liked what I saw and the vibe of the place.

I've researched the surrounding areas (Irvine, Prestwick, Ayr, etc) and have decided that Troon would suit me best. I'm not after nightclubs, busy shopping centres, or a social scene, but a more quieter, sedate pace of life. I know the beach and town is very busy during the summer, but am used to that from previously living on the coast and know how to work around that!

As it's just me, I am looking to rent a 1 or 2 bedroomed flat longterm but am not sure if there are any areas in Troon which are best to avoid. I noticed that some of the cheaper rental properties I've found on my searches are in the North Shore / Gillies area compared to other areas of the town and wondered if this low rent was a reflection of the area, espcially as the flats there seem quite nice and generous in size, good location and facilities, etc.

Hope I don't sound snobby about this - Troon really does seem ideal for me and looks great compared to my current area which has an ongoing drug problem, anti-social behaviour and is pretty much being deprived.

Thanks in advance!

Well people do live in Troon, so I suppose it’s possible to move there. I’m afraid I can’t help you with flat locations. I’m surprised that Troon has more than one area tbh.

I wonder if you have considered the Scottish, and particularly the west coast, winter?

With only 6 hrs of daylight and rain that can go on for weeks it’s very different from England. And very different from the summer.

Yes, we do.

Nothing wrong with North Shore - it's just previous LA housing rather than sandstone mansion like some of the other coastline. I would buy there if I could because it's reasonably priced for the excellent location (and sea view!)

Gillies is one street back from Dundonald Road, which is the main road. Typical sandstone tenements - again, nothing wrong with the area at all.

The only problems that I've encountered recently have been in the Home Reports (you have to have a survey done in advance of sale in Scotland) - there's been some issues with damp, or looming roof repairs in the next few years, or other structural stuff like that in the North Shore / Gillies / Dundonald properties I've looked at. I'm hesitant to purchase with the potential repair costs, but I'd rent them assuming the landlord was going to make good any repairs as became necessary.

Ps - happy to chat. My sister & family just moved from England to Troon and are settling well

Thank you for your replies - much appreciated.

I am familiar with Scotland and it's variable weather patterns and winters. I've spent a lot of time in Dumfries & Galloway over the years and have been caught out more than once in the winds and rain!!! 😀

Having once lived on the North West coast of England for some years, I got used to the unpredicible weather, the short bursts of rain storms and howling winds.

Thank you for the details about North Shore Road and Gillies. I will certainly keep them in mind during my search. That side of the town looks quite handy for the coast, the town and Morrisons, etc.

Thanks again for your help.
